Hi, I'm repairing the brakes, but I have a problem. I wanted to change the calipers, but BBT tells me that they no longer manufacture brake calipers for my 1971 van.

They tell me that the solution is to put a brake calipers with adapters t2b. But there is not much space between caliper and disc, caliper and rim. I do not feel safe driving as well. What is your opinion?

Thank you very much need help

Your calipers:

https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/211615105EX/caliper-left-8-70-7-72-exchange/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/211615106EX/caliper-right-8-70-7-72-exchange/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As BBT say you can use:

https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/bay-bus/211615101/caliper-mounting-bushes-fit-late-caliper-to-early-bay/?crumbStartPage=1&crumbStartRow=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And fit the later 73 - 79 Calipers but use your original discs.

Hope that helps,

Cheers

Alex

Ive just had some fitted to my 71 with the adapters and I'm sure the guy that fitted them said that he had the same problem. He had to grind a little off the edge of the caliper if I remember correctly.

He did say that he hadn't come across this before ! Where were the callipers / adapters bought from out of interest ?

Thank you very much Alex. I'll have to buy the brake calipers rebuilt. I think the best solution even more expensive.

Right to put those calipers you must iron out some brake caliper. It did not like, especially when you are buying a new piece.

Thanks Bobster

Not wishing to hijack this thread but I have a similar problem. Can anyone tell me if I fit later calipers with later discs will this solve the caliper problem on my crossover bay?
Cheers

You would need to change the spindles at the same time, there is a difference in the spindles.

You got a 71 so i like to call em "special" and its nice to keep it original, rebuild the calipers! Its what i did, cheepest solution and now they brake great again. Also read on here before there was some place in the UK that you could send your old ones and they would sent you rebuilt ones. Cant remember the place but if you search must be here somewhere. That was my second choice if the calipers were really bad and not good enough to rebuild myself.

Man up and get the grinder out ! You will only have to remove a tiny bit of the casting to get it to clear the disc carrier. You could get your old calipers repaired but if there is any pitting to the pistons they will not be re-usable. On the subject of safety what make of axle stands are they in your pic - looks like Durox to me !

Thanks to everyone for the tips.

Finally I have decided to remove and restore them. The external appearance is resolved giving a good cleaning. The pistons are in good condition. But there is another problem.

I have bought the repair kit. But I need the seals that attach the brake calipers and this kit are not.

Anyone know where could I buy it?

Thank you

Soon I will put photos of the restoration process.

Yeah, I had the same issue with my new calipers a few years ago. Put on the late bay ones instead, with adaptor brackets to fit. It is tight and mine did rub, but a quick nip with the angle grinder sorted it - never had any problems since.

It was MOT time so had to act quickly. Otherwise would have probably rebuilt the originals.
