Hiya,

I bought my first van on the weekend 8) and want to get him waxed/treated to protect him a bit. Could you advise what is the best thing to do/use, should I take him somewhere and get him done properly?

Thanks

Hiya, It's certainly a job you can do yourself. I wouldn't pay for someone to do it (unless your rich) most EB aren't..!!)

Use the search option and look up key words like Polish, wax, anchor wax Etc :D

Thank you, no I'm definitely not rich  I'll search for that thank you.

His underneath has already been done so it's just his top I'm worried about at the minute.

  I have called him Bert, although the last owner kept calling her a she too  . I'm a girl so it only seemed right he was a he :D So he's big Bert or Bert the bus

 I'm a guy but I have always thought of my bus being a "he" rather than a "she" too.

I have no idea why really and it doesent have a name either - its just "The bus/van/camper whatever, despite having owned it a very long time.

ps. Welcome :)

Thank you for the welcome :D and no name  , I had named mine before I'd even took the deposit down :D

Here he is, in all his shininess.

Wow he's looking great, which particular one did you use as I looked and there seemed to be a few?

Thanks :D

I used Collinite 476. Really excellent stuff. Easy to get on and gives a great shine. Also makes the rain bead and just roll off. Very impressed with it.

I use Zaino (Z2 + Z8)

But as with most things, preparation is the key, a good wash with washing up liquid (to remove the old waxes). then a clay bar, to remove any surface contaminants, machine polish if required, then a wax, sealer or a combination of both.

Check out http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/, these guys are really helpful.

Thanks guys, I do really appreciate all the help as I wont him to look good :D

" good wash with washing up liquid (to remove the old waxes). "

Apologies for contradicting , but whatever you do, don't use washing up liquid! I was told it has 'salts' in it to create the scouring action for the greasy plates etc and is not a good mix for automotive paint which is quite soft(unless you want to scour it off for that patina look ;-) ). There are plenty of cheap car shampoos that are safer for your lovely (expensive) paint work than good old fairy liquid. Agree totally about the rest, clay bar will do the job well.

Cheers!

I would have thought old wax would be removed at the clay bar / machine polish stage anway. Can second no washing up lqd.

I agree, washing up liquid is quite harsh, that's why the car detailers use it to remove old wax.

You are correct that this is not what to use day to day, but when you are stripping back, there is no better solution, but you do whatever you wish.......

I didnt know that! ( learn something new everyday), I just remember my dad used to wash his car using fairy and his cars always looked s..t  , guess if you have an already heavily waxed car then its protected and so something harsher probably required, but if the car isnt alreeady waxed , as you say, not a day to day solution :D

Me neither, a couple of years ago I bought a new car, agreed a price from the dealer that did not let them polish it, then took it to be professionally detailed, it was that guy who showed me how to really clean a car.

Fastidious bordering on anally retentive !
