Actually, you misworded that question slightly. It should have been..............

"should i down grade to have bolt on rocker covers"

The best set-up for leak free rocker covers is the stock set-up that VW installed at the factory. The gaskets do need to be good and the bails may need to be changed out to assure a good tight fit. Quite honestly, the folks I know that have changed to those "super cool" bolt on finned covers are always complaining about leaks.

Ooh! Big can of worms!!

You will get so many differing answers on this one!

Some say stock, some stay bolt on, some say grease the gaskets, some say fit them dry!

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with standard clip ons with new clips and gaskets fitted dry. So saying, I use bolt ons with dry gaskets and never had a leak in the 14 years I have been using bolt ons on my fastback and bus.

The only thing I would really advise is stay away from the cheap chrome clip ons and spring clips. They aren't really up to the job.
