Silly question for the guys with the roof racks, how often do you use them and how do you use them, ie do you drive with stuff on them or use them as extra storage when parked up and camping.

Do you have one just because it looks good or because it is useful

I'm just weighing up the pro's and con's

I see loads of vans with roof rack but they are usually bare or with the odd suitcase

I'm thinking they would be useful when camping like putting the spare wheel on the top to make the Westy bed bigger and putting the cooler on at night so it out of the way and keeps cool??

Any pics with guys using the racks (not so much for trinket use)

Edit- just thought would be good to carry the radio flyer it's huge!

I carried a spare wheel on mine all last year, it makes a heck of a difference to the space in the back of the bus when sleeping.

Having said that, when it came to tuck her up for the winter, it took me half an hour to get the spare down, and meant taking part of the damned rack apart. I have bought a new version which should get around that problem, should I use it for the spare this year (having thoughts about not carrying one).

This is the new rack.

I have a Tin top Westy like you, IVe been greedy and got 2 roof racks which i use depending on how much i have to carry. Ones a 3/4VW of america rack and the other is a full length rack, both realy useful and look cool too. 8)
I wouldnt be without a roof rack now.

I have mine for both looks and use, I fill the 3 bow when we go away but dont tend to use the 2 bow. If I didnt use them I'd still keep them 8)

Do roof racks dammage the gutters? i'd like one but worry about hurting my bus.

The period ones can do as they usually have not got any protective rubber etc but you could always get some thick rubber and make your own. The new ones should come with rubber bits to protect the gutter.
