Ok I guess I need a tachometer, I need to set my carb up and I want to get the ideal at about 800-900 RPM so I need something to help me, has anyone got any advice on a cheap good tachometer to use :D

How about something like these. Depends on how much you want to spend.

Thats the one I was looking on Maplins as well and couldn't find anything, thank you

I've got one of these meters, saves a hell of a lot of guess work and as it fits onto the igntion leads its right in front of you making setting up the revs, dwell etc a 1 man job

i did this job at the weekend when i fitted my new dizzy. I borrowed a snap-on strobe with inbuilt tach.
Problem i had was my engine wont idle that low. With exactly 7.5deg at idle and 30deg total advance i can only get my engine to idle at around 1050 rpm. Do i need to adjust the carb to suit the dizzy?

Bosch 0231 170 034. Basically the same as a VW 905 205 with vac advance. How did you get on with setting your rpm that low?

You don't say what carb you have. Read this link it will give you the general idea of the tune up proceedure.
