So my lovely bay now has a sexy new engine and throatie exhaust - cracking job by Ashley at Berks Bugs!

So next job is gear shift...

Recommendations please guys.

Ease of fitment? Performance? Interference with handbrake?

Personally, I'd finish sorting out the engine first.

If you're not running heating, the fanshroud heating pipes should be blocked off (with a 10mm diameter hole to allow some air through). You should also block off the holes in the rear tinware (nearest you in the pic) where these would pass through normally, to prevent the engine overheating. It also looks like you might be missing the piece behind the pulley?

Tidying the wiring and HT leads would be a good step too. VW originally supplied plastic clips attaching the HT leads and fuel line to the fanshroud.

Can't help with the shifter, I'm afraid.

Yeah - rear tinware is off my old single port - waiting to be changed.

Will be running heating too

cheers - good observation

Cool :)

If you're replacing the gear shifter, don't forget it is a good idea to make sure the couplings (especially the one under the bus by the gearbox) are OK.

I replaced the one on my bay, and I am happy enough with the gearshift now that I don't want an aftermarket gear shifter. :)

Possibly? What makes you want a new shifter?

Before I replaced the rear coupling, I used to almost hit my hand on the dashboard when going for first or third gear  - it is fairly nice now, and I've not even replaced any of the components at the front end of the gearshift - only the rear coupling (#21). Normally I'd suggest only buying genuine VW parts, but I've fitted a Urethane one as the genuine VW ones were not available when I needed mine. I'd imagine replacing the central couplings, and the reverse lockout plate under the gearshift would help things too, but mine is good enough for now.

I got a Scat shifter for a tenner off of eBay, and changed all the gearshift bushes and couplings. :D
Can't really see the point in spending a couple of hundred pounds on a gear shifter, although it might save me a couple of seconds on the way to Sainsbury's.

I fitted a quick shift plate???? thingy, it reduces the throw a bit when i bought the van first which helped quite a bit, last year i replaiced the bushes at the front and rear of the linkage and wow what a difference it made, stock shifter new bushes ;)

I've got the Empi Hurst style 1, transformed my bus when driving around town, looks cool too 8)

But.... it was a Bastard to fit, took me and my dad a couple of hours! It was so sensitive to the slightest of adjustments to the shift plate. After a massive arguement with dad  and a broken screwdriver  we got there 8)
