OK, we all know or suspect that certain companies are plainly ripping us off, with extortionate mark-ups on goods. Here is the evidence:

Renovating the brakes on the bus and one of the callipers has seized completely, so...

1. Cool Air: Refurbished calliper: £207.60

2. C & C £185.95 (they say they will price match)

I bought the exact ones for: £78, the surcharge was £10, which is refundable on sending in your old callipers. I got them from here

Incidentally, I contacted a very well known VW specialist and asked for a quote to fit an engine, he said £500, without any hesitation. A local garage then quoted me £200 and explained the time and charges involved. He told me this is a very straight forward job.

So the moral is shop around, do a Google search for what you need. Why pay an additional £100 unnecessarily?

was this for 71 only calipers too?

Yes it was. I spoke to the guy, he was very knowledgeable and was shocked at how much these so called specialist companies are bleeding us for. He took down the OEM number cross referenced it and knew exactly what he was talking about. The customer service was uber fast and efficient. He even checked the same item on VW Heritage.

I got mine from here  even cheaper :D

Late calipers are even more expensive than the "rare" early calipers or is the word "rare" another yawn being spun by the VW specialists (rip off merchants)

The brake pads were mintex too, which fit first time :D

Just had a look on Brakeparts UK.Purchased a brake service kit £21 and a 1 bleed nipple £2.09p from one of the well knowns suppliers!Brakeparts £13.73 and 96p unbelievable!!!!

This is interesting. I was under the impression new 71 calipers have been unavailable for years. Edit....ok, recon units. Still an amazing price though :D

Marco's link is great. Genuine ATE late calipers for £68 !

I paid almost double that for new TRW calipers last year, dammit!

Edit, the late ATE calipers are recon units as well but still a good price. Wish I'd known about those last year.

Thanks for the links chaps ;)

well I am extremely grateful for having found this, just about to part with cash for some new (sorry recon) callipers and this will save me a small fortune.

Cheers :D
