Ok a friend of mines friend sold there late bay to a guy down the road a few years ago now, and they saw it parked up the other day, but it had a different number plate, it was a 74 but now the plate says 71, but the guy has still left the bus looking late not early, surely that is really wrong.

First thing I'd do is check the tax in the window to see if the vehicle class has changed (i.e. is it now classed as a historic vehicle). If so then it should be reported. If not, and he's still paying tax, perhaps he changed the plate for other reasons (maybe the new plates letters are his initials or something). Just a thought.

Then I guess it's a case of whether you take the moral high ground or let it be dude. The balls in your court.

what do u get when you check the reg. on the DVLA vehicle check website - it will tell you the vehicle details (first reg.) and taxation class ....

I'd report him for the simple fact that he's claiming he's got an early bay when it's a late  How's he gonna explian it to the new owner when he comes to sell it if they know what they're looking at :?

its def the same van as the owner know who she sold it to and he only lives round the corner, but its my mates friend really, so its up to them if they do anything, I just assume his insurance would not be valid, there for if he hit anyone and hurt them they would get nothing, and thats the bit that gets to me really that people couldnt really care about other people.

he may only be doing it for the free road tax but it is illegal and makes the van a ringer, insurance isnt valid and its plain naughty.
id have to do or say something dude to keep your consionce clear

I wouldn't be too quick to jump on the guy. I know it seems weird, but I came into ownership of a double door bay earlier this year, a right rotter, but registered on a 74 M plate. The vehicle actually ran Tax exempt. I took a load of flak on VZi for it, but it all checked out, I had full history, DVLA agreed and VW confirmed the build date. A lot of dealers took on vehicles and then didn't register them for long periods of time, due to sales trends and bonus accumulation. Its not as strange as it may appear.

It could actually be pre 73.

If it's a late model bay it's very unlikely it would be a pre 73.

This kind of thing goes on all the time with Land Rovers.
Sounds like this guy has not executed this very well, and is asking to be dobbed in :?
I think it's a great idea for Free road tax, the amount of time most Campers are actually on the road is very minimal compared to daily drivers.
I did hear once that in Ireland motorhomes/Campers are all Tax Exempt?

What eva this geezers reasons ya gotta go back to the insurance thing..

Not strictly true...

But Motorhomes and Camper over here only pay a very reduced annual motor tax of €78 (approx £53)

And then anything over 30 yrs old (including campers) only pays €42 (approx £28) per year.

And even better...campers and classics (>30yrs) are all NCT exempt (MOT equivalent)
(Maybe that's what you heard?)

Report him  if its sketchy and he hits some kid with it and the van is found out to be not as stated, everything is void, mainly insurance. Would NOT want that on my mind.

If you report him and your wrong then, no harm done. 8)

Tough call.

On the one hand Im not convinced that reregistering a van to effect tax free status is too henious a crime - on the provisio that its done thouroughly - ensure donor van is scrap, destroy all receiving van docs/info and ensure tax, mot and insurance is in order and relevant.

People dont bat an eyelid if bug bodies are swapped onto tax free floorpans to acheive the same ....

In this case though maybe its a half hearted attempt and the mot could also have been 'transferred' and thats wrong :(

A full fat late bay 'can' be tax exempt in its own right - just. They were made from Aug 72 onwards and 'usually' have a fuel cap flap fitted.
