Hi All,

Just replaced plugs, points and condenser but she seems sluggish now on test run. Plugs were already preset at 0.024 inch (Haynes quotes 0.024-0.027?). I set points gap at 0.016 (Haynes). Any suggestions?

I've not done anything with timing yet (but if she was running fine before and I have these things set right you would expect her to run as before/better?).

Thanks for and advice
Craig

Did you check the points gap before changing them?

A different gap can mess with the timing .. So I would always re time after points change or adjustment.

Deffo the first thing I would check..

Do as Hillly says. The fibre lobe on old points will have worn. After fitting new points, timing should always be checked and reset. Fitting contact less electronic ignition is fit and forget.

Cheers guys. No I didn't check points gap (school boy error!). Determined to pick up some mechanical skills instead of running to garage .... Every day is a school day :0).

So for timing then, not to buy myself one of these timing guns?

I did wonder if spark plug gap was wrong as depending on where you look the gap size does vary.

Cheers

You can static time it (just search static timing and it will show you how..)

A timing gun is a good investment though if you want to get it closer and check advance is working..

only paid around £30 for mine and it does the job.
