Split Charger test

Old Stanley has a new leisure battery and he is also fitted with a split charger unit.

When at home I have been keeping the battery on a trickle charge and the battery is holding a full charge, after a weekend away with a long run home the battery was below 12v. The battery from memory is a 80ahr unit and we only used the radio and LED lighting for maybe an hour over the weekend.

My suspicion is that the split charger is not working, to test it is it just a simple case of attaching a volt meter to the split charger output side whilst the engine is running and powering the alternator?

Just put the voltmeter on the LB, note the voltage then start the engine, you should see around 14v when charging. Check the fuse in the split charge circuit. Mine had popped.

Well found the problem, the fuse in the charger unit had blown I had taken the live wire from wrong side of the dizzy. Silly billy all seems to be back in working order.
