Yes bud, good move, you knows it makes sense. I’ll probs try to get down the yard in the morning, give me a shout if you’re about.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,see Nick and them boys. :)

Have in mind before putting all your effort into fitting seals that were bought years ago is that rubbers have limited recommended shelf lives; initial storage & then a shorter extended period if still looking OK.
Times vs rubber type can be found online. Times are best case scenarios, assuming no UV exposure, using cool dark clean conditions.

Most seals for oil/grease are Nitrile which has an initial storage shelf life of 7yrs. Fuel seals made of Viton type rubbers are more resistant so 10yrs initial storage shelf life, as is EPDM rubber which gets used with certain brake fluids seals.

Whenever I see NOS brake hydraulic parts up for sale I always wonder how those vintage OG seals will perform once pressed into actual service.
So it’s worth pausing to think before you use a borderline aged seal kit, or to get fresher ones, before you put all the blood sweat & tears in.

Thanks for the heads up. Viton seals are a no-no for rotating parts apparently, in the corvair world anyway, really not sure why mine only last around 4-5yrs but I’m guessing they are Chinese origin. I can’t get them in the uk so rely on parts suppliers in the USA who will ship internationally. The seal kit I have came in about 2yrs ago so I know are fairly new. Agree with vintage nos rubbers parts though

In my day job we make plenty of viton rotary shaft seals for some big names, so the Corvair viton remark is puzzling.
It gives almost the best thermal & chemical resistance out of all available types, but stiffens up sooner at very low temps, but I also feel like if abraded it powders away slightly easier than Nitrile, so maybe that’s been a problem they found.

Just to update this for future reference
The rear Teledials are 15” x 7” ET52.3
Now that the rear stub axles have been replaced with shorter late bay units the track is 24mm narrower and the rear wheels now rub on the adjustable spring plate adjuster nuts and also the handbrake cable. I had a 5mm Porsche spacer in the garage that seems to now clear the above but doesn’t allow the centre cap to fit, I will get some 15mm spacers and then the caps will fit and the tyre will still have 9mm of space between the arch.

I have some 986 16” Boxster wheels that I’m considering fitting, these are also 7” wide (at the rear) but with an offset of 40, I want to fit a 205/60/16 XL tyre and in theory If I use the 5mm spacers then the inside edge will be tight as I will loose 3mm, the outside edge will be 7mm closer to the arch but will fit, I suspect I will be needing some 10mm spacers in the future but the jury is still out.........

In other news PDC Parts supplied this lovely front end brake upgrade

I think I will get the 15mm spacers and get the Teledials on, change the front brakes and then attack the 986 wheels at a later date

I got the rear end buttoned up so moved on to the front. I got a Wilwood kit for a Late Bay as I have a Red9 wishbone that uses LB spindles.

Easy to fit if your handy with the spanner’s

Off with the old
IMG-3721.jpg

First I mounted the caliper bracket

IMG-3723.jpg

Then greased & fitted the supplied bearings and spread out all the hardware

IMG-3726.jpg

IMG-3724.jpg

The disc is bolted to the hub

IMG-3725.jpg

IMG-3727.jpg

Cleaned & checked the spindle

IMG-3728.jpg

Unfortunately the locking nut makes contact with the hub, I need a washer that is being sent foc from PCD parts who supplied the kit to rectify this. For now I flipped the nut as mine is shaped and putting it on the other way round missed the hub.

The end result looks great, the proof will be in the driving

IMG-3732.jpg

As always when modifying cars, one thing leads to another, I love the extra tuckage I have, probably around 20mm extra but I can’t get the centre cap on.

IMG-3734.jpg

More wheel spacers required with these wheels at least. I’ll make some measurements when I revisit with the washer, but maybe around 15mm to get the centre cap on the wheels

Following on from CB chat elsewhere & seeing as it’s dry out thought I’d reposition the rig. I wired in a live next to the drivers seat for just this kind of install years ago. Just checking the circuit is live

IMG-3740.jpg

Using one of the holes already pressed in the seat base was just about the perfect position

IMG-3742.jpg

Also took the wheel off and loctite’d the wheel studs and the disc bolts to the hub. On checking a 15mm wheel spacer will be fine although the near side centre cap will need some modification to fit fully

Looking fallward to ur feed back on the new front brake setup.

Did the flexis fit straight onto new calipers? Have you got a servo fitted?

Anyway looks great.

The kit came with new flexi hoses and they fitted the standard copper unions.

No servo assist…

I have noticed that the calipers are dragging slightly and after reading something recently I’m wondering if my master cylinder is worn, let’s face it, it’s probably the original one!!

Probably will look at replacing it then everything in the braking department is brand new!

Anyone got any recommendations on a MC?

You should speak to Ozziedog as he replaced his when he found a brake issue.
