Hi all

Purchased my first vw yesterday, but sounds like the steering box needs replacing as there's alot of play and a clunking noise coming from it. I've managed to source one but been looking through a few books i've got but cant seem to find to much info on removal of the old one / fitting new one? Is this a really hard job? Anyone know where i can find some info on doing it?

Cheers

first of all likely that your box is a bit sloppy, have you checked the drag link steering coupling etc... as all will lead to sloppy steering..... which book are you using as the Bentley is superb...

basically unbolt the drop arm steering coupling and the chassis mount and remove....the drop arm may be a bit on the tight side soak everything in penetrant prior to attempting to undo....

Is the bentley like the haynes but easier to understand?

Cheers

there a bit better in lots of respects but its always wise to have a few different manuals and read them in conjunction as some have better text others have better photos and others have better exploded views.....

so at the minute my fave is the autodata just bought a mint used version and loving some of the detail in the drawings.

Bentley is outstanding and always have a haynes kicking about (one indoors clean and one outdoors grubby)....

simples.... i hate this job and on a british bus you`ll really be swearing especially as the rust will have locked all nuts to the bolts....apply lots of lube for several days before even attempting it...agree with the drag link theory good luck :!:
