moving steering wheel in either direction I get a clunk then some movement at the wheels, according to po the bus was stood due to steering box clunk but looked at box and seems ok. Followed the clunk and it seems to be at the base of the steering column, the coupling looks like it's split (ordered a new one) could this be the source of the clunk?

Quite possibly, but I would have thought maybe just a bit more slop than a clunk. The coupling does have a failure rate to it. Be carefull to inspect the new one and check that the reinforcement internally isn`t actually visible through the bolt holes or you could end up earthing out your horn and making it sound continuously because the horn is permanent live and earth switched. It` happened quite a few times :?

Thanks Ozzie, hope the coupler sorts it but sounds like it may not be it causing the clunk, but will see.

Worn drag-link?

Mine was a bit sloppy at the pitman arm end; lying under the bus when the steering wheel was turned you could just detect movement between the two.

Clunk's and notchy feeling is normally down to wear in the steering box itself.

Alan Schofields do a refurb service that is worth considering if the coupler doesn't resolve your issues.
