Ok I have just discovered this forum site so I apologise for bombarding it !
The steering wheel has a lot of play I can easily turn it about a 1/4 turn before my wheels move. I have had a replacement steering box put on but it made no difference. So what would be the first thing for me to check/replace and is it a garage job or can an enthusiastic owner do the job ? I have put on a new steering damper over the years. I know its lazy but this problem has, like every thing, been with the vw since I bought it. I think I just get used to the odd things and start to think its normal !
Thank you

Could be your track rod ends, drag link pin thingy  on your beam, drag arm!!

Check them all and yes easy to replace if you know how ;)

Is the new steering box adjusted correctly? Also get someone to move the steering wheel while you lay under the front and see where the play is located. :D

You mention a replacement steering box ?? Was it new ? or reconditioned or secondhand ? Up until now, there has not been a recognised way of properly reconditioning a steering box because of a few engineering ```issues' ' ' . Some one over at Heritage I believe it is,, has taken on the challenge to reconstruct steering boxes in a good way. What I`m getting at is ,, you may have replaced the box for one equally as poor, I take it that even though it`s been a little sloppy, it`s passed the mot. Which would suggest that all the other componants were acceptable at mot time. If you aren`t that good with ball joints and stuff, might be worth popping into a VW friendly garage for a second opinion. Or maybe have a drive in some one elses bus to compare ,, where are you inthe Uk ?

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,, I`s in Brizzal

Well it was new to me from ebay, so maybe genuinely no better than my old one. Its passed its MOT each year.
I will have a look underneath whilst some one moves wheel. Sounds like a good idea.
I took it to a buddy at the garage and he said the ball joints looked good and gave them a grease up.
The last time a vw enthusiast checked out the box a few years back he reckoned it was as tight as possible.
I have had a drive in a late bay and the steering was totally loads better !
Just thought it may be time to try and reduce the amount of play in steering.
Its gonna be the weekends job if the rain holds off.
Thanks

I had the same problem with mine, a little bit further than the other suggestion, but give Steve at Zeds Bus Garage in Mildenhall a shout. He knows his stuff and won't rip you off.

He took everything apart last month, cursed the cowboys who bodged the steering and popped in a brand new late bay LHD Steering box, we had Litesteer fabricate a special plate which they will still have and sorted out the rest. Once the engine is in, we'll know for sure if any tweaks are needed, but I'm happy that a solid job was done...quite a few have-a-go cowboys about.

I've used Russ at Justdubz to look at my steering & it was about an hours drive from the Boro. I've only covered about 500 miles since but seems to be a lot better.

thanks for the replies. I am actually gonna change the steering pin and see how that goes. Not really got the spare cash to pay too much out. Off to Morocco for the winter in about 10 days ! Thanks for the heads up about just dubz. Nice to have for future needs !
Went and got the camber adjusted also it was seriously out, so at least that will save my tyres
