I just used a normal general purpose hub puller. Cheap from a local motor factors.

I had to take my steering wheel off a few months back and couldnt find a hub puller anywhere,
Some one told me if you take off the screw that holds the wheel on and put it back on so it just covers the thread on the shaft then hit it with a hammer whilst pulling on the wheel then after a couple of hits it will pop off.
It worked  just be careful not to hit the edge of the wheel or the horn connector.
Just a thought if you cant get hold off a puller.

Try using your knees to lever the wheel when sat on the seat along with wibblers loose nut on approach (assuming you are reasonably tall) ;)

Not that I'm short but I'd need a couple of built up shoes to manage that...

Think I'll try and source a decent puller as my wheel is mint, rather not chuff it yup.

Hiya 5erge,

Hah! I'm always amused when I read about steering wheel removal. There's always the suggestion of pushing up on the wheel with your knees. Man! You'd have to have the legs of an NBA center to do that. I'm 6'1" and waaaay short to accomplish that little trick. Besides no amount of "leg effort" would ever budge my steering wheel.

After roundly cracking up the plastic trying to get a steering wheel off, I took the advice of a pro and drilled a couple of holes in the hub. I then threaded those holes. Now I can use a regular gear puller with no possibility of harming the surface. Comes off like a charm.

Remember to remove the nut and soak with WD40 or other penetrating oil over night before attempting removal.
Putting some boiled water in the recess in the centre of the wheel can also help to ease it off by expanding the metal of the wheel a bit.

I'm 6'2" and I managed to get my steering wheel off with my knees (although I cant remember if I was using wooden blocks  ), was a proper tight fit needed some penetrant spray and a good few minutes of pressure ;)

Well, I'm impressed.

But truthfully, drilling those holes in the hub made all the difference for me. Removing that wheel now is as easy as pie.

I used the puller from Screwfix but you will need to find something to protect the base of the hub as the puller arms have a habit of slipping off and the plastic is easy to damage.

I bought that same puller from Halfords (the Laser one) found it would slip all over the place and I needed another pair of arms to secure it, needless to say it went straight back to Halfords but I swapped it for a Laser scissor balljoint remover that did a good job of pressing out my drag link.

I'll look for a puller that is similar to the one in the Bentley manual for removing my wheel.

You can buy a "C" shaped washer that fits under the wheel that the arms fit over so it doesn't damage the wheel. Look for a steering wheel thread by Clyde or clem iirc for more info.
