Stereo knackered

Hello Folks
I'm looking for a few ideas on a problem I've encountered with my bus
I dropped my bus off at a VW specialist 2 weeks ago for a service and pre MOT and a couple of minor problems,stereo was working fine when I dropped it off,last week got a call from the mechanic to ask me if I wanted him to put a new leisure battery in as mine was duff,told him to change it all good so far
When I picked the bus up last week it wasn't till I got home that I realised the stereo wasn't working,there doesn't seem to be any power to the Kenwood head at all it's completely dead
I spoke to the mechanic over the phone and he's basically said nothing to do with me mate I didn't touch the stereo (wasn't to impressed with that to be honest) so just looking for a bit of advice now if this as happened to anyone else out there in early bay world any advice would be greatly appreciated

First things first, I`d check the fuses in the fuse board and any in line fuses you have to the radio. If your radio was wired to the leisure battery then there are lots of ways a poor connection could be giving you issues, plus if it`s a kenwood stereo then I`m guessing it was retro fitted somewhere along the line and is definitely not stock or factory fitted. I can`t see how changing a battery could give you any problems and a radio isn`t much to do with a service or an mot either. Is it possible that the radio requires a code to make it work again as some do, especially if they`ve been disconnected from power.

Thanks for the response,being completely useless with car electricals I've decided to book it into my local car radio installer but thought you never know someone on here might have an easy fix
The stereo is an after market jobbie
With regards to a code I can't get that far because the stereo is completely dead
Having spoken to the radio installer he did tell me this Kenwood system does have 2 fuses and he'd never seen both blown at the same time,apparently you should still get a red light on the stereo if one of the fuses had blown
As you say having it serviced and MOT"d was more of a frustration point I was making because it seems I've inherited a new problem and can't help feel it's a massive coincidence that the leisure battery got changed now the stereo is duff

Does everything else running off your leisure battery still work? Sounds to me like the guy who fitted the new battery may not have connected the radio feeds or feed to the leisure battery fuse box. Might be as simple as that. Most new stereos have 2 feeds, auxiliary live and permanent live to hold the memory. Our buses don't have an auxiliary switch position so most people fit both feeds directly to the leisure battery, so if it is totally dead then this is a good bet.

Yeah everything else on the leisure battery is working fine although when I plugged my 12volt coolbox in via a socket in the camper it blew the coolbox I checked the fuse in the coolbox that was fine so it seems to have blown something in the motor, fortunately for me it was still under warranty so Halfords swapped it over (winning) not sure if any of this is relevant to the stereo problem but thought any info might help

Is it possible the garage fitted the leisure battery the wrong way around?
That could be effectively minus 12V on the leisure supply, which a lot of devices will not like.
Your split charge relay might be sulking too.

Less likely is that it is somehow wired minus to plus in series, giving 24V on the leisure supply which, again, most devices won't like.

I would check the terminal labels/symbols on the leisure battery and see what wires are connected to which.

And if you have a voltmeter you could measure the leisure battery "output" relative to the bus chassis (i.e. ground)

That's a good thought.

Whatever happens, I'd be looking for a different garage from now on though, sounds like they have definitely screwed something up.

Hello Starbiscuit,madman,Ozziedog and anyone else interested in my headache
Just a quick update on my knackered stereo.....all sorted out now it turned out to be a blown fuse in the back of the stereo so a nice simple fix in the end possibly caused I'm told by a power outage when the leisure battery was changed
Still don't know why the 12volt socket blew my coolbox because all the other stuff I've plugged in there are working fine

Glad it was simple bud. Some times the fix is simple but you got to find it first which is usually most of the battle :lol:
