the seal looks good on the input shaft but does that mean nothing, ie is it the other side that could be caput.... any way of testing it ??
how can you remove it and where can I get a new one from... sorry for so many questions but need guidance lol

where my finger nail is there is a small amount of play ie I can pull the bearing edge up and rattle it up and down a bit... should there be play ??

think the red gasket material stuff is coming out of here :-
you can see fragments - would that cause a problem....

a wondering what it is OG

Definately need a new release bearing! That one is properly fubar'd!!

Looks like someone has tried to eat it!!

Have a look here at the picture of a new one, you'll see the difference.

I think that's just the way its photo'd
most of the dark bits are grease and the notches around the casing are there from manufacturing......
also, its only done about 1000 miles so surely it should have lasted longer.....
this is all a bit weird....

also, to be sure, how can I get the input bearing out and where the hell do you get a new one ?? VW heritage don't have them... :-(

a getting madder og lol

Is that the right release bearing?

I thought the older style clutch pressure plate with springs, like you have, used a graphite slip ring, like the one in the heritage photo that madman posted - and that the release bearing with a rotating section with bearings inside was for the later diaphragm clutch plates.

Hi
Trikky
My release bearing came in the kit (attached is the clutch pack I bought originally)

a wondering what it is OG

thinking about this, I think the input shaft bearing is the most likely culprit for the noise....
clutch pedal fully up - noise (gravel like)
slightly more than rest foot on clutch - noise disappears

so surely the only thing spinning whilst clutch pedal is fully up is the input shaft bearing ???
thing is, I cant find anywhere that sells one.... and is it the rear bearing or front ?

any help fellas would be highly appreciated...

cheers

If its your input shaft bearing then it will make noise until the clutch is fully disengaged and you have selected a gear. Only then can you be certain it is no longer spinning.

If the noise stops when only lightly resting your foot on the pedal it would suggest the release bearing or possibly the ring and fork assembly on the clutch are rattling.

Might be worth your while dropping Alex of Heritage a PM for an opinion this? He is on this forum.

well listening to the below, (scroll down to transaxle noises) the nearest sound is the input shaft bearing....

http://www.ratwell.com/mirror/Muir/Muir.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I was wondering about the fork assembly and release bearing rattling but they where nice (not loose)
on inspection with both springs in place) and the noise is constant with foot off clutch , stationary, and in driving all gears.. gets less
loud over 20 mins... so im pretty sure it must be a bearing of some sort....
