Strange whistling noise anyone idea?

i developed a strange whistling noise on the way home from Volksworld.

sound is strongest near the dizzy. i dont think its the clutch release bearing as the noise is still there when the clutch is depressed

have a listen...

My release bearing makes a banshee type noise but only when the clutch pedal is pressed
I gotta say, I was listening for a while and I`m hoping that I was listening to the right thing but it did sound `airborn` possibly a stone chip in a fan blade ? Or possibly a fan slightly touching something, thought I could hear a tappet as well, but very very hard listening to that to actually pin point anything :oops:

hi johnny it sounds like tinware touching either bottom pulley or fan touching fan housing as it goes away when revved as the engine is smoother when revved if you know what i mean ;) take the belt off as that will elimiate the fan if the noise is still there (dont do it for too long 20 secs or so) have a look behind the bottom pulley while the engine is running be careful and use a mirror , ive had the tinware shift a little on me due to tinware screws coming loose and check the two screws behind pulley that hold the tinware on , as ive had one of them come loose too!! :shock:

another thing if none of the above work push and pull the exhurst a bit and see whether that makes any odds

its not the cam on the distributer (needing some lube) that opens the points is it?
 
Could be a few things :?

Have always found the best way to help diagnose these sort of noises is to go old school and get a length of hose (the sort you use for watering the garden but anything semi rigid and a similar bore will do, you only need a foot or two), hold one end by your ear and then hold the other about the engine until you find the source of the noise (careful of that fanbelt!). Sounds hokey but it works amazingly well.
 
i have a length of hose funnily enough, the old guy i bought the bus form had a different use for it :lol:

i was thinking the dizzy as the noise doesnt quite match the revs but drops off later and goes at higher revs. I'll try those things tonightto eliminate them, thanks for the tips. The engine was rebuilt 10K ago so im guessing its nothing serious. I have a wedding in 5 weeks so fingers crossed its just tinware/fan. Valves probably could do with adjustment at some stage too.

by the way the reason the noise comes and goes is because i was moving the phone around the engine.

My vote is on this - smear a touch of dizzy grease on the cam and the noise should go.
 
I can't hear your recording too well either but I have had my pulley touching the tinware and it was a much more dramatic "shriek" than that. I did however have a leak at the carb which caused that sort of noise. Suprisingly enough it only affected running by raising the revs slightly but didn't really show up a major performance issue until I tightened it up properly and then noticed the sharpened throttle response! It was on the left hand carb (I have twin Solexs) and it was a loose carb to manifold nut...

didnt get a chance to go tonight as my uncle arrived just as i was heading out the door, havent seen him for 6 months but he was telling me all about some big Dub show he was at last week in Phoenix. There were a couple of $30K busses and show cars.
 
Not sure if its the recording or not but if it has that "burrr" to it in real life then I would suspect dry heel on the points (no grease on the lobes of the dissy cam) or something fouling on the dissy.

Small air leaks/faulty gasket on the carbs can also cause such a noise.

If the burr is just a fault of the recording and its more constant then check the tinware.
 
that 'burr' is definitely there, its not a fault of the recording. If you turn down the recording it masks the bass and you can really distinguish the high pitched burr. The fading in and out is me moving my phone around the engine bay. Its definitely loudest when its up against the dizzy @44-55 secs in.

I'm too busy with the vert to look at it but if its just the points or cam then thats a bit of a relief. Someone mentioned a special grease? is a high quality lithium grease ok for the job? or does it need something lite like 3 in 1?

Driving back to Liverpool from Volksworld the oil level dropped a bit over the 300 miles. It was just a hair below minimum. I thought i had cooked the engine or something worse :oops:

They do sell special grease but I have always used ordinary high melting point grease like you use in wheel bearings (just a light smear) and never had a problem in all those years :) While your at it you can put a few drops of 3 in one or engine oil in the hole under the rotor arm to lube the dissy works and a smidge on the points pivot. If it still squeaks after that then at least you have ruled out the dissy.

Yes its scary when your not used to topping up the oil and suddenly find a motorway run has used enough to drop the level - been there with the nutter engine I built due to a faulty ring. On the stock engines I never needed to top up between oil changes. Happily I dont need to with the new engine either anymore but it did mean a stripdown to fix it.
