Hi,

I've been wanting to start to learn to surf for the past few years I had a little go in my younger days most of which I have forgotten due to discovering beer!

I'm going to make a few runs Devon /Cornwal way this summer and just wondered if anyone could recomend anywhere good to book lessons or just generally visit in that area?

Cheers

Dave

I know the feeling - I fancy the same but my 9 year old daughter is keener that me so she has had lessons at the Nick Thorne Academy in Woolacome and Extreme Academy in Watergate Bay. Both very good...

Woolacombe (North Devon) is a great place to surf, it's pretty safe and a big beach so there is plenty of room. In terms of lessons, not sure really but I would advise to maybe just have a couple of lessons and then hire a board. There's no substitute for time on the water!

Might see you out and about sometime, a few of us are looking to organise an Early Bay Surf trip. Keep checking the forum.

Take it easy, surfing's a great pass time! ;)

as windsurfer said...was on woolacombe beach yesterday...... fantastic for learners..... soooooo much space so plenty of room for everyone! no nasty rip tides due to being a long beach rather than a smaller cove....
and like saunton round the corner...nice long waves... perfect for longboards (the learners best friend!!!)

saying that I have never seen surf schools at either beach?!?
i once had a day lesson at bude with the 'Big Blue' surf school... was pretty good.... but then after that its all about getting lots of practice!!!!!

for North Devon (saunton, woolacombe and croyde) it would have to be Lobb fields - just about half a mile down the road from Saunton beach!

We visit Woolacombe annually. My favorite place for really mellow surf with plenty of room is Putsborough which is the other end of Woolacombe beach. There is also a really smart camp site RIGHT on the beach. Word of warning, although Putsborough has surf hire, when ever we have got there its all been hired out. Hire from one of the many outlets in Woolacombe then drive round to Putsborough (or walk it like we did!)

Whs^....... "lobb-on fields" all the way especially if you have a dog, if not and your feeling flush try ruda at croyde.

We have a pooch and Saunton is my favourite wave in the country so we always stay at Lobb-on.

We got married at Saunton last summer and our wedding photographers who are friends tried http://www.walkingonwaves.co.uk/ and they were very impressed. Hope that helps.

We are going down there straight from bristol volksfest next week and then on to the eb meet in perranporth.

We stay at Woolacombe Sands holiday park. There is an indoor pool and outdoor pool, on site bar with entertainment for the kids, the facilities have always been clean and you can walk to the beach through the pony trekking school!

Plenty of bars and surf shops :D

Can't beat sitting outside the Red Barn having a Hoegaarden and some grub whilst the sunsets!

We stayed at Damage Barton - a mile or so up the road and a Camping & Caravan Clubsite. It is on a cliff top and a bit too "rules and regs" for me...it was very windy and as I was trying to put up my awning whilst it was almost blowing away the people in both caravans either side were sat there watching me out of the windows. Wont go back there unless we are desparate.

Devon and Cornwall, turn your satnav upside down so it directs you the otherway!

We stayed at Golden Coast in August for a week - 2 mins drive from Woolacombe beach and no problem getting in the car park providing you get down there fairly early - don't think it opens till 9:00 anyway. Expensive site but on hard standing so no mucking around with mud! Rock pegs needed for the awning. Several bars and restaurants on site plus indoor and outdoor pool etc etc and a surf shop on site too, plus they run lessons. Big bonus is the wave machine too - great fun for an hour (not cheap...) but even better watching everyone else on it! Open till 10:00 at night too.... :D
