Hope someone can help, today I changed the door seal on the tailgate but water is still coming in onto the rear shelf have I done something wrong ?

I bought the seal from JK and the rear door closes properly and there is no rust
I've read somewhere on the net that the rubber lip is standing up when put on ,the door closes onto it and the water runs down the Chanel and out the bottom away from the interior I hope I've explained that properly

Are you sure it's the rear hatch rubber and not the actual hatch window rusted or the seal leaking?

Agreed. I discovered a significant leak after my bus was parked rear end low for a week of rain. I noticed that my rear window rubber was dried and letting in water. There was absolutely no rust on the window frame, the water was getting in between the rubber and the window and escaping out the bottom without pooling in the frame.

OK.
Check door for fit, and then drop the trim panel off the rear hatch and see if there's any sign of water penetration inside the door.
You only need a really small hole in the window rubber or a little bit of corrosion to let loads of water in.

I've taken the trim off and there is no water inside the actual door, help!!!!!

Might be a good idea if you try and `prove' exactly where the water is getting in. After years in the roofing game, you could usually make an educated guess where it was getting in, but sometimes, just sometimes, you had to `prove' it. We would use anything from a hose to a watering can to get water to the affected area depending on what it was. The idea is that you play water over the lower part of the area for a good couple of minutes , ie, the lower part of your tailgate, then keep checking internally to see if there is any water, then you move up a bit to somewhere like where the script is and keep water on that for a bit and keep checking internally in fact two people would be best with one watering and one watching, then play it over the lower part of the glass seal for a while,, then the sides of the glass seal,, then the top of the glass seal,, then the top of the hatch seal. I wouldn`t use anything powerfull like a hose, maybe a homemade watering can useing a 2 litre water or milk bottle with a biro body screwed into it for a spout, this should help you track it down. If this fails ,, but it won`t if you exercise patience,, if this fails, then dry everything with kitchen roll and open the tailgate and dust the opening and both sides of the tailgate rubber with talculm powder then make it leak and the talculm will show you exactly where it`s leaking.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Good luck mate,, patience is the key (and a dry day) ;)

Cheers ozzidog used the talcum powder trick and found the problem, the channel was ever so slightly damaged, I tapped it back straight , put the seal back on and hey presto no more leak
Thanks again

Hi was it the the tailgate seal or the window? mine is leaking and creating a pool of water along the bottom edge just above the engine bay. I will give Ozziedogs talc trick a go when i get a second.

Glad you got yours sorted though :D

Woz

The talc thing is also very good for `proving' hard to sort oil leaks and will show you exactly where they originated even if you don`t really want to know,, like a crack in the case, etc etc

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,, Need a trick now to get motivated in the cold

Our problem was the actual Channel the tailgate seal goes into, check that for rust or damage
The talc trick is superb for finding leaks
