im thinking of ending my project as it doesnt appear to be going anywhere fast. in fact after over a year of graft it doesnt seam to have progressed at all. ithought all was well and decided after ringing a parts suplier and getting prices for the parts i was after, i decided to remove both front arches, arch tubs, and the best part of the cab floor. coupled with my brand new doors i thought my van was gonna be great.

sadley when i rang the parts supplier today, i found out that they dont actually make bay cab floors (only do part repair panels), nor can they source an arch tub for the nearside (for the past 4 months they have only been supplied offside), and also that their front arches in their words "werent that great".

feel like crap now. ive put a lot of work into the van and had great plans but i just keep seeing the great vans coming in from abroad, rust free etc and i just cant face the thing any more

I know how you feel dude, I've been in a similar situation with our bus in the past. I ended up just walking away from it for a while and not doing any bus stuff (think I didn't even come on here for a month or so). Take a step back, have a break from everything bus related. You'll soon realise you've come too far/spent too much money to turn back and it will hopefully give you a new lease of enthusiam for it. :)

Your meant to feel like this at least three times during a resto, the best way to get the panels you need would be as rust free clips from a donor vehicle. The metal and fit will be so much better than dodgy old repair panels. Try suppliers like Megabug or Karmann Konnection. Try to keep your chin up, the amount of times I had moods like these during my resto is unbelievable.

theres a lot of people been in the same position, but plenty of guys on here to help you keep your spirits up ! Probably agree with taking a break from it for a while then come back a-fresh ...

take a break from it, go to vanfest and get inspired.
also getting cut outs from another bus means genuine german steel and it may be cheaper

Keep at it dude, and like they all said take a break....vanfest is as inspiring as some of the resto threads on here.

Just to make you feel better my vans been off the road for over 6 years now and I felt the same way as you cutting out mountains of ***** with nothing going back in.... but there is always a turning point.

Deffo go with donated parts from other busses, NOS if you can afford it.

Supplied by FBI rot free from california, plasma cut from the 'a' post, supplied still attached to the 'b' post. A mornings worth of work to free it ready for welding.

As i said, the turning point......

The darn thing hasn't seen panels this big for ages

Chin up dude

I'd agree with the FBI route. A friend of mine bought a whole cab section last year and grafted in what he needed as it was rot free and fitted perfectly. I know they keep stock of things like this all the time so give them a call sometime
As mentioned you go through these times in a resto unfortionately :? I spent the best part of six months working 9-5 and then coming home and doing 3-4 hours on the van and it took it's toll :(
Mind you seeing the end result is worth every hour spent so keep in there and you'll be rewarded in the end :D

the doors both sides just came in for me last week. I have both sides brand new now. but i did have to wait along time for them. Just hang in there, as the parts will come in eventually.

If you cant wait get rust free. it will have a few dents etc but at least it will be totally solid

you guys are sound. last night i was gona cut the bugger up. and after speaking to fbi today and being told he couldnt help. i was gona melt the bugger down.

but after ringing alsorts of places it turns out vw heratige have the arch tub in the correct side, and to top it off alan at schofields is gona do me two floor repair panels that go in further than normal to meet where ive cut to.

with people like that out there my van cant fail.

ill be at vanfest this weekend after all. and watch this space coz one day my van will role again.

cheers guys

stick in there fella

when shes done youll have the biggest and most deserved smile on your face :D :D

and then you can have all the probs of engine blow ups etc...

Like the man said. I lost interest in my bay pickup project in 1996, ended up losing over a grand :( If you have got the space keep it and walk away for a bit. It will be worth it knowing it's all your own work and you have saved another van.

dont give up, took me 3 years from start to finish ,every year we said it would be ready for stanford hall and finally it was think of the good times to be had when its done

I got my van last june, started a bit found difficulty in getting parts etc,my front chassis rails where corroded from first beam hole forward and no one could get them.In the end I put late bay chassis rail cuts on and a hell of a lot of hard work and changing things over, steering box different, brake pedal bar different, accelerator bar different, front panel mounts different etc etc.You get the drift. It is hard work and the parts can be hard to get but when you first get that van together and get an MOT it is amazing.

My advise, just do what is essential for the MOT then use it as a road going project doing bits at a time untill it's finished, doing most of it off season. It will get done quicker that way and you will much better.
