Any idea what the timing on an " AB" coded engine should be set at please....standard setup with Pertronix 009 ignition. Many thanks.
 
I've just set it to zero degrees after reading it in the Bentley manual and there certainly doesn't seem to be any popping or farting, just the same ongoing fuel problem which it's had for a while. Please have a look at my other post. :?
 
I don't think it matters what the engine is. If it's a 009 dizzy it should be timed to 30 degs at full advance ?
 
As Bobster says 009 distributor is timed at 30 degs. Here's some info from a site I came across wich will be of help to you. It depends on the wear on your dizzy, on my Ghia it works out at 11 degs before TDC.



The thing about timing is that what matters most is what happens at cruising speed, maximum advance--that's where you can burn up an engine quickly if your timing is too far advanced.

But: The Bosch 009 does not have a predictable advance curve--the German ones are different from the Brazilian ones and the worn ones are different from the new ones and on it goes. The natural result of this is that just because you've timed the 009 properly at idle does not mean you have any way of knowing what's going on at highway speeds.

So while the stock vacuum advance distributors can safely be timed at idle (or even timed statically per,the 009 has GOT to be timed to about 30 degrees TOTAL ADVANCE with a timing light. Which means you have to rev it up until the distributor stops advancing before you can dial it in.

It takes three hands and if the process isn't painful, you aren't doing it right. =^ ) It's okay to time it statically at around zero degrees in order to get the engine started, but you have to finish the process dynamically by making lotsa noise.

It is very easy to find 30 degrees without a degree wheel as long as you know where top dead center is. From TDC, measure an inch and three quarters (1 3/4") to the right around the diameter of a stock pulley. That's about 28 degrees, go a tinch further and mark it with fingernail polish or something.

If you don't know where TDC is, then you have to pull the #1 spark plug and push the eraser end of a pencil in the hole and rotate the engine and feel the piston until you figure it out.

Whilst the author of these article recomends maximum revs to set timing ,3000 revs is normal unless you are going to be running flat out all the time.

Ah right, it's all coming back! I remember setting the timing many moons ago on a previous engine with a '009 to 30deg at 3000revs which equated to about 10deg at 1000revs. Many thanks for the info and advice.

That seems the norm, i've got mine at 28deg but 30 should be ok but it sits at 0deg at idle, i guess mines got more adavance than most. i've double checked several times.
 
I always use a 'Degreed Pully',,, Because all engines are a bit different ,, as in some like 28* and some 30* and others somewhere in between
Yes you must set all 009's /010/019's at full advance,with a timing light!!!!!!, then I don't care what the idle is
