I have a Portafold, folding caravan that weighs about 400KG loaded. Was wondering about towing this with my tin top Bay with a standard 1600 engine.

Does towing cause the engine to overheat? Bit concerned also about going uphill !

You'll be fine, just take your time and use the gears on the hills which is what I do towing my Puck.

Do make sure all of your engine tinware is fitted.
The link is a good read if you haven't already seen it :- http://www.vw-resource.com/engine_tin.html

I was missing one of the rear deflector tins upon inspection so replaced immediately. I also regularly change my engine oil prior to a long journey and haven't had a single problem in 1000's of miles.

I was wondering the same thing, but i have an Eriba Pan weighs about 750KG, not towed it yet with our 1600TP tintop, didn't think i would have enough power, will be upgrading over the winter to a 1776 with twin webber 34ict,s
what are your thoughts

I don't know the exact spec of my engine as it came with the van. It's either a 1641 or 1679 but it's a cracking little motor and have no intention of replacing at all. It has twin 40's that I've had set up on a rolling road and fitted a decent exhaust plus came with an AT gearbox for better cruising speeds.

I don't have a deep sump or external oil cooling and haven't had any issues at all and recon I've towed the Puck about 4000 miles so far. Earlier in the year I drove none stop from Warrington to St Austell, Cornwall in 6.5 hours.

My advise would be to road test your current set up with the Pan. Yes you'll be slow going up hills but just accept this.
If you want extra power look at achieving it first with your current engine with carbs etc.......before you start throwing money around on a 1776 that may be no better.

One thing to also consider may be to swap the Pan for a Puck which would work out cheaper in the long term. That saying by the time ours is loaded up with ***** it probably weighs as much your yours.

I'm afraid I won't be at Tatton for the second time in a row as on holiday. I'm back late on the 6th so drop me a line from the 7th onwards as happy to pop around to catch up. Mike
