Been told transit vans are great but some years are crap IE post 98 are no good true or false.

False - I drive newer Transits most days at work (Royal Mail) and they're brilliant to drive: Loads of power, great steering and brakes - really comfy too!!!

;)

My '78 transit was great & just like a VW........ crap heating

Nearly replaced my work van for a transit earlier this year but spoke to three different people and none of them had a good word to say of their transit. I've decided to wait and get a T5 and keep it for a while , more money to lay out at first but a much better return. Having said that I've had a Mazda E2200 from new and it's been faultless but they've stopped making them now due to some safety issues.

to many of them on the road for them to be crap, ive had nothing but hassel with my 2 t4s but id still get another

New 1 are nice to drive and **** to fix :x

I agree the pre 1998 transits are bullet proof for reliability, you still need to keep up regular servicing. The later generations are not so bullet proof but are more refined. The problems include gearboxes, clutches and dual mass flywheels going, fuel pumps going and other fuel system parts.Wheel bearings going and front discs are more of a pain to change.Water pumps leaking coolant pipes splitting etc.Along with vauxhall vivaros/renault trafics they're the vans I do the most work to.

The trouble is now that most pre 1998 transits are starting to rot away now where the bodywork is not usually looked after.
I also agree the Mazda E2200 are great vans,a carpet fitters choice because of the length but around 2001 they weren't up to the latest safety standards/crash testing.Head gaskets are the only things that go on these like most japanese diesel engines.
Stay away from the vauxhall vivaros/renault trafics/nissan equivalent they're even more unreliable than modern transits, but they do drive nice.
The latest vw transporters aren't too bad,I don't have to fix many in my work anyway, execpt things like the dual mass flywheels failing which most do now anyway.

If I was to go for a modern transit sized van I'd probably get a VW transporter.

What's a dual mass flywheel?

;)

A dual mass flywheel is something which should be scrapped and replaced with a single mass never been a problem solid flywheel old style.
