Righto boys and girls, final summer  without the bus so focusing on holidays, love this country but not the same without the old girl, camper that is, will be taking the wife

we have done greece loads and love it, but have "avoided" turkey thinking it is mostly just like greece, we generally just do self catering in a studio type thing not big all inc hotels, not us at all.

bareing this in mind have any of you fine folk done turkey and if so where would you suggest, i would say reccomend but i can't spell it..............

I've done turkey twice before I am going back on Friday. But I have a young family so go for a different type of holiday me thinks.

I stayed at the Rixos Premium resort which is said to be 5*, very nice but full of Russians. But lovely food and a really nice resort.

This time we are staying at a Thomson holiday village... Which I doubt is your thing unless you have young kids. My wife took my kids there a couple of years ago and loved it.

Both are in Belek which is quite nice (although a lot like Greece) but its quite cheap and the locals are are friendly.

I've been a few times, Gumbet, Bodrum, Marmaris, Kusadasi and Antalya. Always enjoyed it, weather is always spot on, nice seas and beaches, very cheap on the whole and locals are pushy but still friendly and non threatening.
Last place we went was a bit 'Russian' but that's the ways these days.

cheers guys yep them russians are getting everywhere had a couple of trips to corfu/zante and even the greeks don't like 'em cuz there rude.

can't decide what to do for a main two weeks just got back from a week in tsilivi on zante (really nice) but have done greek to death as we like the greeks and greek food, but thinking really ought to do something different.

Me and the wife did all the Greek Islands, liked them but fancied a change. We had always avoided Turkey because I assumed it was full of other English people, which is the last thing I want when I'm abroad. A friend recommended a place called Kalkan, we went there once and fell in love with it. Been there 5 times now and even got married out there. It's a beautiful town, built into a hill with a smallish harbour. There are 2 or 3 bars that are open late, and about 70 restaurants, most with roof terraces overlooking the harbour. The standard of the food is superb, I travel all over for work: Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Holland, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, but nothing beats a fillet steak in Kalkan.
There's a few things to do, lots of watersports, the day boat trips are excellent, horse riding across the sand dunes, etc. The locals are really friendly, not pushy at all (they aren't allowed to be in this resort) and they like the English.
If you want a banging clubbing holiday avoid it, if you want to chill out and have some great food and relaxation, it's perfect.

I've just come back from there on Monday, been going for 13years as I've got a place in Altinkum near bodrum. Place is great and cheap, especially as the lira is now 4 to the pound:)
Along the west coast is more British then down south coast is more Eastern Europeans, but must say the hotels are cleaner s the Germans are fussy lol.
Altinkum is nice for a quiet one but still enough bars, restaurants and a few clubs to keep everyone happy. If you want basic I heard the Seabird hotel was £37 per week for BnB, not sure if that's correct but be worth checking out online. You can book your own flights and I can help you with the transfer. Pm if you want any more info

Man, you guys get about, I haven't been further than Newquay for about 5 years! (Unless you count Northern Ireland but that's visiting family and not sure it coults as 'abroad'!!)

...but my parents (late 60's) have reccomended Croatia as somewhere a bit different over in that direction....

There are lots of alternatives to Turkey that are probably better from many ways, but Turkey is cheap as chips!

thanks guys all very interesting, the top and bottom of it is, when we had no money holiday choices where easier ie. want some sun and sea abroad what was cheapest deal, easy done. now that we are a little more comfortable it gets harder because we see holidays and go, flipping heck thats expensive we could do, and have done that for a lot less. and since we hade the bus... we had most of are main weeks in the uk only the last couple of summers and this one where we have had to think a bit more, touring round france in the focus is not the same

We have thought about back to Canada out west to do the Stampede in Calgary just missed it last time we were there, but it's a shed of money, and cannot decide are we just doing it because we cannot decide or do we really want to do it, we hired a car and toured BC from Vancouver thro' the rockies to banff/calgary and tented it with the occasional motel for a soak in the bath cost very little but to old to sleep on the ground for 3 weeks these days.

never thought of portugal, don't play golf and we are under 50 :) So Clem elaborate on some ideas.

i need to get a move on time off is in SIX WEEKS

just a note on the Russian's if you haven't encountered them before, they are incredibly rude and love to push in but if you snap at them they soon learn. On the plus side the women are bloody lovely looking.

Depends what you want to whittle it down really ... assuming a sunny med break, then

Cyprus, Greece, Turkey (in that order) are 'similar' and reliable

North Africa-ish? Morrocco, Tunisia, Egypt? Very hot, more 'hassle' but some good trips to do in Eygypt, obvs. We are doing Tunisia in July.

Canaries are a decent bet, or try Cape Verde on the African side, much less developed but lovely place to be.

Whats the budget and time restraints? Florida or California out of the equation?

Lovely looking Russian women who are incredibly rude and love to push in - which website is that Darius?

Russian women going on holidays are keeping the stonewashed bejewelled denim indusrty alive!
