Hi there,
I was out in my '72 crossover bay the other day when I experienced a loss of power on the motorway, the engine became very noisy like the exhaust had dropped off(it hadn't) something along the lines of a noisy motor bike.
It eventually stopped on the hardshoulder and the RAC man was of the opinion that a cylinder head gasket had failed as he could feel a draught where one of the spark plugs was seated. The spark plug was correctly tight.
Now I know that type 4 1700 aircooled motors do not have head gaskets but I am not what you would call a "hands on" engine man so could anyone out there enlighten me on what this could be.
By the way the engine still runs but very roughly and noisily but it will not drive more than 100 ft without stopping.
Thanks!

It may not have a "headgasket"but it does have a sealing ring and if it was a type 1 the head joint can still blow if its been over heated .engine out and strip time.
