Hi,

I decided to build a new typ1 engine instead of puting a type4 in my bus. I want a torqy engine so I am considering a 78mil crank. Top power is not the main goal and I think 70-80bhp is more than enough.

It would be great to hear your opinions about the best early bay engine. Size, camshaft, carbs, injection? and so on. The car will do a long trip through Europe and north Africa so mileage is of interest to...

From the research I've done 1776cc is apparently the best compromise between power, reliabilty and driveability.

You'd probably be best off ringing round some of the reccomended specialist engine builders, laurie petit, aircooled performance etc etc

As above, a well built 1776 would be perfect. 8)

agreed - I built and engine a few years ago for the very same purpose - not an all out racer but a relaible, well cooled, well balanced and fairly torquey - it put out just shy of 100bhp in the end. I spoke a lot with John Maher Racing (JMR) and he was extremely helpful in giving advice. In fact the engine i ended up building was pretty much the one detailed in his engine building CD.

As i rememebr it was:
1776cc - As41 case
JMR hemi cut heads - 3 angle vavlejob (cant rememebr valve sizes) - these heads still available on his site i think - also match ported to inlet manifolds.
Engle 110 cam
Dellorto 40s
009 with pertonix
Berg Uprated oil pump with external filtration
Counterwieghted crank - dynamically balanced with the standard weight 8 dowel flywheel
cromoly push rods and swivel foot adjusters
Berg oil breather tower filler
1 5/8 4-1 manifold with turbo thomas muffler

and a sprinkling of other goodies to make it look shiny and do nothing at all for the performance!

was a fantastic engine - I spent a long time colelcting all the correct parts and built it myself for about £1500. i was miticulous in buiding it and it was worth it in the end...defo recommend reading JMRs book/CD.

Thank you for your help guys!
As I have never built an VW engine,( but some Ford, Vauxhalls and Volvos), I will get the Cd and then decide, but the 1776 sounds like a good and not to expensive alternative. :D

i've gone for a 1955 which will be mildly tuned to around 100bhp at the flywheel. The cam is critical get the right one for low down torque which is far more important that top end speed, after all you want to be able to overtake easily but not get caught doing the ton :D
