....please! I'm struggling here gents... as there isn't really any fitting instructions, just three trouble shooting answers and a maintenance guide. So for an office jockey like me Im goosed. :?

I've fitted it but can't engage reverse, even taking the plate all the way to the left. Does it need the spring from the old one or does this pull up instead of push down? Its seems to pull up..... :?

There doesnt seem to be any indication of which is the top or the bottom of the shifter (base)? I've tried both and still no reverse. Obviously this is important but how do you know?

How do you get the stick in the right position? I've set it then tightened the nut at the bottom but after a few movements through the gears it slackens off and the shifter stick wobbles like a fat chick over cobbles.

I thought these shifters dont foul the dash or the handbrake like a stock shifter? Mine does which I'm gutted with as this was the main reason I went for this over a Berg or CSP.

Any help would be appreciated..
Ta la's..

Gary.

To engage reverse you have to PULL UP in neutral no springs needed your plate may need pushing to the right a bit.
Always remember to return to neutral so the shifter returns back down or you wont be able to select 1st & 2nd.
When I first fitted mine I couldn't select 1st & 2nd & had to move the plate more forward. mine is quite near the dash but doesn't hit it & is just below the handbrake the only time I hit the handbrake is if it's still on
It's fun & games to get it right as your finding out, as I have messed about with stock shifters the VS was pretty easy to set up. Remember when you get it right for you tighten up those bolts real tight.

Gary.

My Berg doesn't hit the dash or handbrake even when in gear, its a 72 so the shiftrod is different but wasn't aware the shifter was located differently?

Mine located the same as my old 79 was. :?
I did have pretty good instructions with mine it was over a year ago & did show which way up the plate went & to do a basic setup in 2nd gear as if a stock shifter.
The base plate goes with the ski-slope(raised bit) facing up to the right as a stock shifter.
Hope this is of some help.

Cheers all.

Bret, how did you tighten up the stick and get it in the right position? Any force on this and it just spins loose.
If I wind the nut and the shifter all the way round/down and tight it's in the wrong position.

Thanks

Gary

Are you talking about the shatft/stem the long shiney bit  cuz when I had mine it was all ready assembled but noticed when other peeps received theirs they had to bolt it on to bottom if your having problems there it may be defective buggered threads, have you the right shifter :?: is it for a LHD or RHD they are handed.

Just looked at that but does say can be adjusted, mine must of come already adjusted for LHD. :? So you'll need it angled nearer to you in 2nd gear.

Don't know if this is of any use at least it shows you the correct position of the base plate, seems to be for a Bug or Ghia.

Cheers bret. I've got it on and it works fine in all gears apart from reverse. No matter how I adjust it I just cant get it to engage.
:x

I'll give you £10 for it Gaz it may fit my crossover :p
Or maybe it just doesn't like ginger buses either way I'll take it off your hands i could even throw in your thermo mats for free :D

Well at least you got all your forward gears  does it lift up ok it should be pretty positive feel to it, undo the two bolts a bit enough to be able to tap the reverse lockout plate(very bottom plate) to the right, I use a old flat head screw driver against this plate then lock it all up & then lets just hope.

Had another bash tonight and Eureka!!! I've got it in and working great.

The key was to ditch the plate that came with shifter and use the original one. Don't know why that one didn't work but hey... Who cares!!! The vans shifting like a dream. No more notchy second.

Thanks all for the advice.

Use some locktite on the threads, 2 spanners and hope you get it tight enough.
