Ok I've just been in the garage looking in the bus got me leed light out having a look at my fuel pipes.
Forgive me cos im no mechanic. Untill 10 mins ago i couldn't even tell u where the petrol tank pipe outlet was. It seems the pipe from the petrol tank runs over the gearbox round the left hand side of engine into fuel pump and is all one solid piece of metal pipe. Then from there its to carb and is new rubber and new fuel filter. I think I've got that lot right. So are u guys saying the rubber part get a new piece of pipe and from fuel pump send it back out of engine bay and have the fuel filter above gear box where the solid pipe comes out of fuel tank? Could i fix it to the solid pipe via tie wraps ?

Yep that's basically it, I wouldn't fix it to the solid pipe with tie wraps though.........
Use proper sized jubilee clips as illustrated in the ebay link I added.

If you can manage to upload a photo of the solid pipe coming from the bottom of the tank towards the gearbox it would be helpful.

Yes thanks for the link was very informative. Ill get a pic posted tom ... Well if i can its kind ov hard to see but I'll do my best. Is a solid pipe normal or r they normally flexi pipes. The solid pipe does seem to b coated with a soft sheeth / covering almost braded material but im I'll 99% sure its solid all the way ???

Not sure if I am reading it right but to confirm, it should go fuel tank then the filter then hose to carb (or metal if you wish) then pump to carb

Then from there flexi to filter flexi to carb . It may b wrong but looks like the solid pipe been there years and like most bits on this cali bus seems good as new

Thinking about it in my work van ( non engine purposes ) i have a water tank with a filter before a pump. I guess in my bus a filter bef before the fuel pump would make sense . The strange thing is the solid pipe looks like a factory job in the bus ?

To be honest with you, no matter how good it looks, after my experience (luckily no fire) and many others who've ended up in flames, I would replace everything from tank to pump then pump to carb with brand new stuff inc. clips, and make sure that filter is above the gearbox.
Avoid anything covered in braided fabric!

Make sure you get a rear piece of tin for your motor. If your bus is non doghouse I can give you one for the cost of shipping. But it is very important in keeping your motor cool. Pm if you want one shipped to you..... I am in Canada though

Yep, solid alright...
No clips holding flexihose to pipe or tank though...... :shock:
Even though the pipe is solid I would go for replacing the whole lot if it was me.

Where the pipe goes through the firewall there is a chance that metal could be rubbing against metal and the pipe will eventually wear, unless you've got a decent rubber grommet in place.

Also, I'd drop a line to one of the modulators and get this thread pushed over to Technical - you'll get a lot more response from other members.

Thanks squareweave that's a really nice offer. I was aware i had a piece of tinwear missing. I emailed vw heritage a week ago with a pic and they emailed me the code of what i had to order in its all sorted. Once again many thanks for the kind offer.
There's some really nice n helpfull people on here !

As far as the fuel pipe is concerned guess i better redo the lot. I've been looking on the web for a full kit solid pipe from tank to pump then flexi . Can't seem to find what im looking for. I can find flex. I can also find a solid pipe for engine bay but not longenough to go all the way to tank?

Anyway ill try find someone to move this post

The kit I got from the eBay guy is more than adequate and I'd never done the job before.
Wasn't too much trouble for the piece of mind.

Yes im sure that would b fine i just kinda had it in my head to replace with similar solid pipe from tank all the way to engine bay like it is at mo. Your kit if I've understood correctly is flexi pipe?
Im little bit nervous about doing it lol wouldn't gonna get that wrong
So i spose best way is to jack bus up and access it from underneath ?

Right pic four show the braided fuel line coming from the tank the filter goes there, replace the braided with non braided fuel line and replace the bit where the filter used to be and bobs you uncle, if you want you can fit a 90 straight out of the tank, there is a little filter in that as well from factory.

So I decided today to replace the fuel line
Got myself this kit from ebay

I jacked the bus up and I had decided to replace for now the flexi pipe from the fuel pump to carb . This section has my fuel filter in so was going to as u chaps said send it out the engine bay and fix above gear box. Seemed fairly simple. Once I had a look I had thought the pipe from petrol tank to fuel pump was all solid but it wernt . The pipe was braded all the way from tank then solid once it got into engine bay. I was going to get the garage at a later date to renew this section but decided to replace the lot. I was gonna do it but didnt feel I have all the info I needed.
Once I undo the nut fixing the braded pipe to the fuel tank I guess all the fuel will poor out ? What should I do ? How is that pipe fixed to the fuel tank outlet
Also in the kit I purchased what is the small piece of solid pipe covered in flexi which is bent into u shape
