Not sure what I’m missing and need a fresh thought.

Just imported two buses from South Africa. Buses went into the container running fine. Few months of container time (shipping delays etc) and I have a none start issue on both of them.

New battery added. Turns over - not firing

Remove fuel pump and oil cap - move fuel pump stand and pin to ensure not hydro locked

Replaced fuel pump as thought maybe diaphragm may be dry from high heat in container.

Drained fuel that smelt like varnish

New fuel added

Checked to see fuel pumping - bottle check to fuel line to to carb.

Drained fuel res and checked float - sprayed with carb cleaner.

Removed and cleaned main jet.

Removed and cleaned air volume screw - spray cleaner in air volume screw port.

Put all back together still not firing.

Will run on starter fluid / petrol down the carb throat so I have ignition.

Any thoughts ?

Hi there, can you look down the carb and see fuel spraying when you physically work the throttle linkages? If not,I’m guessing that the needle is stuck in the seat or the banging about with an empty carb has buggered your float level and left the needle stuck, it’s only an open and shutting type valve but can be enough to stop the juice getting in that carb.
Plus with the bottle check for the fuel pump, is it shooting to the end of the bottle like a teenager in love

If you haven't got a spare carb just dope it ( remove the air filter and pour about half an egg cup of petrol down the carb throat and then the crank the engine over - if it then tries to fire you'll know its fuel related ). To test for spark I keep one of these in my "breakdown " kit https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AccuSpark-Sparkplug-HT-Lead-Spark-tester-testing-tool/181934972625?
Hope you get it sorted .

Do you have a spare carb you can chuck on? Just to see if it fires up and runs.

Will run on starter fluid and/or dumps of fuel so ordered a carb kit to replace most of the stuff that can be at fault to see if that works. Its pretty strange as both busses have the same issue. Thought at first it was dried out diaphragms in the fuel pumps which I've had before with aircooleds sitting for a while in the heat.

Float stuck on carb?

removed, cleaned and refitted - no beuno. Ordered a new one in a carb kit. Hopefully this works as I need to get a move on with the registering and adventuring...

Hey Klaus, when you replace the float and needle and seat, pay a bit of attention to the condition of the old bits. If the float stays good after submerging it overnight in fuel, then put it to one side for re use at a later date, see if you can blow through the needle and seat, and I’m guessing this is what is gummed up. Try and prove what it is that’s gone wrong and is causing these issues, might be a good knowledge resource.

Will do. New carb kit delivered and I'll go through bit by bit (will help short cut the second bus reactivation and help as a resource)

Update :

Carb serviced and rebuilt with full carb kit NS

Fuel line end to end replaced (including filter) NS

Fuel tank drained completely and new fuel added NS

Airflow cut off replaced - NS

Carb replaced with Empi 34 pict from VW Heritage, primed and starts on first turn. Just needs mixture fine tuning.

Summary: think it’s clogged up bypass holes. Solex will need a professional soak, clean and rebuild but will use the new Empi for a while and defer the £300 quote for now.

Need to find an Aircooled MOT specialist in the west and get the registration sorted - roads to be travelled !

I’m in the West bud. Gloucestershire. One bus in Cheltenham and another in stone house. Will trailer them to a spot that can do MOT / list / fix stuff of be sorted.
