I was booked in today for a tune up on a rolling road. When I got there the guy had a look at my accelerator linkage and said that needed repairing to get full movement at the carb. He did adjust the timing & carbs at idle which seemed to improve tick over a little.

At best my accelerator pedal is opening carbs 3/4 of the way so hopefully the repair kit will sort this but what will a rolling road session give me in addition to what I have had done today?

Oh and while I'm at it, although I was only there briefly (1hr) he seemed like a genuine guy who knew plenty and didn't want to rip me off - charged me £20 for his work and encouraged me to replace the accelerator linkage myself to avoid his labour costs. His garage is a little out of the way but while I was there he had an Aston Martin DB6, Talbot Sunbeam (see first photo as it's not what I imagined) a Daimler, a Jaguar, an old Fiat 500, a 60's Mini Cooper, and various other classic cars around that I've forgotten the names of/couldn't recognise, oh and a Seat Altea :oops: Anyway, IK Classics and Racing of Holmfirth nr Huddersfield: http://www.ikclassicsandracing.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I've not had my bus on the rollers but in the past other vehicles and always found it to help with better running or increased bhp. But I was talking modifed race cars 200 bhp! Then again if he finds you 1 bhp on a 40 bhp motor that's a good improvement

Hi Andy ..

Got yer motor back ok then ..

Let us know how you get on with the rolling road guy .. might take mine up there when its done cos i just got some twin carbs ..

If the linkage isn't too worn, just shorten the long rod from the pedal and reshape .. give you the extra movement at the carb ..

See you soon mate ..

Yeah, tho took twice as long as I had planned! Ended up going to my mum's on the train then getting a lift to Stanford  was pleased with how it went then, and the improvements :D The tinkering today has made acceleration smoother too.

Ian at IK Classics has worked on vans before and he seemed to know his onions, just need to stop spending money on the van - we haven't even got away yet and I'm nearly spent up, Nic will be after my blood :fighting0030:

Always worth getting it set up at a decent rolling road and save you money on fuel when correctly set up and will give you some extra beans to get up them hills.

If anyone is in the Bristol area or is not to far away, give me a shout and I will put them onto the guy that i use and you will even get a bit of a discount ;)

there was a good article about rolling road in volksworld this month (i think) seems to be well worth the money and they went from 141bhp to 155, 10% seems to be a good target.

Their advice was make sure everything else was sweet (points, leads, coil and valves, stuff you could manage yourself) as it would save you alot of money as £50 an hour is the going rate and those things can suck up time if they are not roughly in the ball park.

hmmm, sounds a useful tip for somewhere handy and local

btw benyon, i have clocked your van a couple of times, you're over meanwood way right? i live up the hill in chapel allerton :)

I just booked myself into Race Shack for a session, in 10 days :D

it is amazing the difference a good tune makes. a lean engine can destruct very quickly and burn its valve to a crisp in no time. also well balanced carbs are a must as i have heard stories of snaprd cranks in the past. it makes the 40 - 50 quid an hour very good value for money

 I've got a stalker ;) Yes thats me, I first saw your bus at Moor Music Festival last year - or at least I did if you were there?! But didn't realised you were so close!

Oh, I've just worked out how to multi-quote from the same thread

be good to know how you get on andy if you take her back. its only down the road for me. :D
Yeah I plan on going back, once I have sorted the accelerator linkage I'll be giving him a call, will let you know how I get on.

I am up at Raceshack next Friday for a session - I will let you know how it goes - biggest problem according to Ben at Raceshack is the fact 98% of vans that go there need adjustment to the throttle linkage as the carbs are not opening fully. Worth a fiddle before you go there I reckon

Yeah the guy I saw said the same, simple time consuming jobs can be done at home to save on costs. Mine needs sorting at both ends

after the session, how much power am I likely to have, based on 1800 Vege 5 year old engine with twin Dell 32's - 90bhp??

once my gearbox is rebuilt im gonna book in for another session for mine. ive ditched my heat exchangers for j tubes since the last one, added my ext oil cooler and gonna go from 30 to 32mm chokes in my webbers
