im in the middle of my 69 bay resto and coming near to the end of all the welding.... but ive found that the rear crossmember thats in between the chassis rails has a few rust holes in.... do i patch it or do you think it would be best to cut it out and put a new one in.... cant decide ....

Always a tricky one - if you think you can cut out all the rot and patch it so it's good and strong then do so - plenty of waxoyl (or similar) afterwards should see it good for years...

;)

if your doing a resto then change it, it will only come back to haunt you later on otherwise!

agreed with kustom, change it now, will pay dividends in the future, when you go I wish that i had ......... 8)

thanks .... im changing it as ive changed every other panel and ive already done the front crossmember..... gonna order one now off coolair as its free postage....

be carefull to get the right one they usually list them from 68>79 but the one i got dident fit due to a diff chassis think i fitted a splitty one in the end

i had the same problem with the front one... jk list front and rear ones as 68-79 .... ive just ordered one of coolair and thats listed as 68-72 so hopefully should be ok... if not i will have to get a splitty one.... while im here a have another question.... my bay has had a new front panel at some time which is solid and good but whoever fitted it didnt bother to repair the inner windscreen panel... do you think i can repair it without having to cut the bulge panel off..... its not gone all the way across but just on the first 4 inches either end... the only problem i see is the dash mounting strip the runs right across....

mmmm could be tricky its easy enougth to take the top of the dash of so you can get to it but like you say the dash strip might need to come of to do it properly

i cant picture it in my head but i thought the top of the dash rivets to the inner ?

i think so, its like a long L section that runs across... not sure that if i cut that to replace the inner corner section that i will be able to get it lined up again for the dash top....

i supose you could put some tape over the outer thru the screen hole and on to the inner in a few places then make sure the tape lines back up when refiting,

screen hole, been fiting glass for 15 years and never called it that before

lol..... dont know anout screen hole , i could think of another hole to call it !! good idea with the tape thing... i suppose i could really screw the dash top on after i repaired one side to line up the mounting bit that i have to cut off.... what would we do without the internet....

well id be geting the bus done ,just carent be arsed today .took the day of and all ive acheaved is a hair cut,oh ive fed the fish aswell

i know the feeling, its just to hot to be bothered to do anything let alone welding and grinding.... ive got know excuse though as i had to be signed off work sick 2 years ago and still havnt finished this damn bus, her indoors has made the most of me being here doing diy and garden stuff.... would rather be at work as less work to do there...
