Just about to fit some new brake shoes I've bought from a reputable supplier and they are very poor. The clue is on the box "Made in China"....lol

The ones on my bus have 6mm shoe thickness left and these new one only have 4mm. They are definitely not going on. My existing shoes have plenty of life left in the shoe material, but they are very rusty.

So where is the best place to buy some quality rear shoes. As I've got a 71 I'm struggling. All the usual suspects have them on their website but do not list the make so reluctant to buy another set as they may be as bad as these.

Help

Thanks

Mine's a '71 built 08/70. I bought these:

http://www.customandcommercial.com/vw-baywindow/brakes/rear_brake_parts/rear_brake_shoe_set_8fslash70-7fslash71_1468/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I don't remember them looking dodgy - I wouldn't have fitted them if I wasn't happy with them but I can't remember where they were made. I've done 2,500 miles on them across Europe including some decents in the alps with no issues. They are cheaper then the German Quality ones for later models so I'm guessing that there's a difference.

Not much help I'm afraid...

That's them. They may have had a different supplier when you bought yours. These I have are Euromax and say made in China on the box. As I say they only have 4mm of shoe material whereas the existing worn shoes have at least 6mm.

I'd like at least a make I know. I might try GSF.

If it is just surface rust on the shoes then why not carefully clean them up and paint them without contaminating the friction material. Should last you a good while yet.

Agree :D

(the ones on my van are from Just Kampers and have done at least 50k+ miles so far and still fine)

I've seen brake material come away due to the adhesive failing with rusty shoes, and for the cost I thought I may as well change them for piece of mind.

I've now got some EBC shoes from the EBC Shop, £25.20 with free next day delivery. I knew these were quality straight away compared to the chinese shoes from the weight alone. They also have almost double the shoe material. I paid £25.99 for the chinese ones too so the EBC are also cheaper.

My front recon calipers and pads (Mintex) were from Brakeparts.co.uk and these were much cheaper than any of the VW specialist, and I've now saved on the rears with much better quality. I know where I will be buying brake parts from in the future.

It pays to shop around :mrgreen: I've had a few euromax 'quality' items, like the plug leads that broke straight away :roll: can't believe vw suppliers still sell crap.
