Who's got what??
How much??
Where from???
Easy to fit???
Do they work???

Your thoughts & recommendations please!

FireTec, horizontal mount.
Can't remember cost to be honest but wasn't too dear (I went for one of the simplest models i.e. no switch/dash light stuff).
Group buy from this forum.
Not difficult to fit: 2 bolts + metal cable ties. Mine's going on the spare wheel well and would be a pain to drill the holes with twin carbs in the way.
I bloody hope so!

I have a firetec as the Heritage Daus ones were not avialable at the time, they are both very similar kits:

I am very unsure about the gas systems doing the rounds at the moment as a van engine bay is desinged to suck cool air in one side and move it out the other so in my mind the gas would clear pretty fast risking it re-igniting, powder may be messy but it works, hence why its used by all motorsports.

I have the Firetec one from the group buy on LB earlier this year. Easy to fit.! 8)

I hate to be picky  but there should be 100mm of straight hose coming out of the extinguisher before your first bend according to the m.i. :)

Nice engine bay 8)

Here's mine, it's coming back out though as I'm painting the bay this winter

:?: Woops I was going by the black dot at the base of the cylinder/bottle that should be at the bottom most part. Mine was to stand up at the back but change position. May just turn bottle 1/4 then. :D

Is it just a normal fire extinguisher???
Or is it something fancy??

Is it the hose that's the clever part???

Cos car fire extinguishers are cheap as chips on eBay!?? :?

I fitted mine today, £175 all in.

I haven't bothered (yet) with the LED indictors that came with it- I check the oil level every trip so no extra effort to check the pressure guage on the device itself

Took 5 minutes to fit, basically strap it on, no wiring,

(It does have a pressure de-activated switch to control LED, solenoid or electric fuel pump if it goes off)

Does it work ? I hope I never find out !

Bought off Peter off the trader section of the forum: http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=50047" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Is gas better than powder or foam ? - I really don't know...

That one looks nice n neat, I think they are £200 now like!
Same as the one from heritage.

Powder or gas :? .?
That's not even a question I'd thought of  !

I'd have to disagree with you there - the air is drawn in through both vents by the fan and exits into the 'hot' zone under the engine bay. The fan will stop when the engine stops running, as it will when the extinguisher discharges. We'll assume that the van will stop pretty smartly after that, removing any potential 'ram effect' through the vents.

It's a powder extinguisher that activates automagically when it reaches a certain temperature.
the hose should disperse the contents of the extinguisher evenly across its whole length so we snake it around the engine bay to make sure that wherever the fire starts it is covered.

Yes in part you are correct but have you ever stood by the vents when you arrive somewhere, go and try it. You find one side is hot and one side is cool ;) There is also a circulation of in and out of air through the vents.

So gas ones are ok?

Alex, what sort of trade discount do I get on one of your ones??

90% would be nice

So it's the actual extinguisher that has the heat sensor??
That is clever. :D

N.B. Gases should not be specified for fire protection in engine compartments subject to strong draught or turbulence from cooling fans or road air. Draughts dissipate gases allowing re-ignition of fire.
*shrug*

I think it's the tubing that is affected by the heat (Firetec "Reacton")
http://firetecuk.com/pages/en/firetec-products/firetec-ct-systems.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Heat touching any point on the tube causes it to rupture precisely at that point releasing the pressurised contents of both cylinder and tube directly towards the heat source.
I retract my previous statements about why we snake it across the engine bay ;)

Well I'm ordering one this week, that's for sure after seeing a bus on Friday that didn't have one

It's either the vw air cooled works one

Or the heritage centre one!

Can't make up my mind which?????
