Which carbs?

After a couple of camping trips in the bus this year it struggles when fully loaded (standard 1600TP) so I'm thinking of replacing the standard carb with someting else. Can anyone give me some guidance as to what would be suitable? :?: :D
 
I doubt you will get much of an improvement just changing the stock carb. These buses are slow when fully loaded, and do struggle up hills.
Just changing the carb wont give you what your after, changing to twin carbs will improve things slightly, especially in conjunction with an exhaust system that allows the engine to breathe easier, will be louder though.
The only problem IMO with going down this route is your asking a small motor to work much harder. If you want better all round performance you might need to think about a bigger engine, or fitting something like a later 2000cc type4 motor.
 
im planig on a 1600 TP with twin Dellorto DRLA 36's. twin carbs will improve torque (what you need for going up hills) power and also fuel economy. the major problem with the standard vw system is the manifold. the fuel atomises in the carb then hits that lovely T piece where some of the fuel falls out of suspension.

With twin carbs the fuel is carried straight into the the cylinder, this means that the fuel is better mixed with the air and you get a more complete burn, which means less is thrown out of the tail end and more goes towards improving your torque and power.

BUT as stated above there is no susbstitute for CC's. I will be going 1776with a engle w110 and a merged zaust and some mild porting on the heads. :mrgreen: . One day. :lol:
 
I do hope to fit a bigger engine in the future but i'm stuck with the 1600 for the moment so just wanted to try and make some improvements on that. It has got a bugpack header and mondo silencer already and thought twin carbs would be the next sensible step, with a cam maybe? It just seems a bit of a mine field and I need some good advice on what would work well?

My brother in law (strongy) has twin weber 36's with the same exhaust and his bus runs rings around mine! So a similar set up is all i'm after.

A set of twins will improve things just enough to make a difference. I have just got twin 34icts on mine and they have made a good difference in power and better fuel economy. :D
 
Even if you want any improvement to power a twin carb set-up won't be ideal on it's own. Fuel/air supply, igintion and exhaust systems have to upgraded. Just carbs' own their own won't make any noticeable difference, you will need a bigger and stronger spark to burn the increased fuel/air mixture and a free flowing exhaust to allow the extra gases to escape the combustion chamber

This is new to me, on all my engines i had/have twin 34 solex carbs from riechert Germany and they make a BIG difference on a further stock engine and exhaust.

I have weber 34icts with a stainless exhaust and my stock heads have had a little work and the van is now at about 60bhp, with isnt bad for a 1600. 8)

I think i did'nt word what i was trying to say correctly :lol: Yes it is true you will get more power from fitting just twin carbs, but to take full advantge of them it is best to improve the other components that i mentioned

A set of Weber 34 ICT's, 36 or 40 IDF's will work well as will some Dellorto 36 or 40 DRLA's.
I've got a set of Weber 40 IDF's with 28mm chokes and it runs sweet. The extra power is very noticeable from 2nd gear onwards.
