I'm sure this question has probably been posted before but where have you guys purchased a new engine from & what did you go for? Laurie Pettit seems to be a favourite. Have heard quite a few horror stories from various suppliers, so what U got?? Any suggestions/ideas welcome. :msn4:

Laurie is excellent for tailor made engines,

We have some good off the shelf solutions too:

Remember your EB discount will apply to these too.

I will and always will vouch for Jase at Interpro in Bristol, total custom or off the shelf, he is awesome and a great guy to boot 8)

I had my 1914 built and installed by Paul miller (harry harpics). Very happy with the results and great after care as well. Also not too far for a visit and a chat.

I opted for a Californian build. Powerhause built mine. Very professional service, non pushy and he gave very good advice on all ancillaries.

I call it "The ice-cream maker".

Here it is on arrival in Blighty

Good product
Good price

That's a lovely looking bit if kit, how much was it including shipping?

I will always use Dan Simpson since he built me this beauty. 1760cc with a stroker crank. Never have to cringe when I see a hill anymore.
His knowledge of engines is second to none.

Now that is a thing of beauty - do you have any more info I guess its a 2110cc, PM me if you want to keep it on the download! Stunning
I have been considering ordering a turnkey engine from the states however the importation taxes confused me on exactly what I would end up paying for.

Hello Stu,
Thanks for the kind words on the motor, I can't wait to fit in next month. Some of you have PM'ed me asking how much this costs etc:

The cost of one of these engines will depend upon precisely what you want. I think the exchange rate has improved since I bought it last February.

COST: Overall I think your looking at between £3.5k -£6K in English pounds.

TIME: it took a month to build, they send you pictures from start to finish. Go here for my build

SERVICE
Top rate, the owner Mr Johnn Randolf is a very easy going, polite and non push guy. He would ring me up every week and tell me what he had done and asked questions regarding key aspects of the build, as I have a mechanical "blindspot". I'm sure he thought he was talking to an imbecile at times as I would ask the most stupid of questions.

SHIPPING
They send it on a pallet, with a very thick corrugated cardboard box. I had my reservations about this, but it arrived in perfect undamaged condition . Shipping costs were about £350 ($750USD), although I paid extra to get shipped to a local airport outside of Gatwick, this was another another $150, as it was cheaper than to drive to london.

SAVINGS
I saved on this purchase, but added a few extras such as a Flamethrower Dizzy and Porsche fan Shroud as both were half the cost of the price in the UK.

CHOICE
I chose to have one build with Powerhause as they build 9 engines at any one time, and have building engines for 30 years. I checked their website and every week or so a new build would start. They shipped to Australia , Canada and all over the world.
The engine took about 2-3 days to arrive via UPS. Customs cleared it in a day.

It was no different than buying a small item.

Incidentally I got it pained in the stock pastel white for an extra cost by John, but it comes unpainted otherwise. I do not know any reliable engine builders in the UK, and as I am not really in any VW cliques, it was hard for me to trust or have an engine build which would be guaranteed, this along with the obvious saving prompted the purchase.

ANCILLIARIES
Not shown in the picture is an external oil filter and fan with ALL connections, you also get a hat, tee-shirt and a few sticker 8)

IMPORTATION DUTY

Hope this helps you decide. Any other questions let me know

Forgot to mention - it's a 2110cc lump.

Hi,

I didn't get around to replying to your PM, sorry, but I think you have answered most of my questions! I'll take a look at your links, and just maybe..... :msn4:

Looks amazing in the white tinware, though i think a smaller less "race" like engine might suit me.....unless i say bollox and Red 9 wishbone the front and disc brakes, gearbox etc.....

Look forward to fitted pics!

Alistair
