the sky???

when i first did the resto i slammed the van as low as i could go,but over the last year or so its slowly making its way back up.

today i lifted it up another 2",im sick of rubbing arches, scraping antiroll bar and just genrally banging my way around the country.

ive also fitted a new clutch today and the van is like a new one.

i hit a manhole on the way home ,as i saw it coming i clenched my whole body like usuall ...................nothing no jarring no bang

i love the look of a lowerd van but never again.

   I know the feeling but that is what makes it special, I do think stock buses can look cool too.

My beetle is going back to stock height... I've never owned a stock height vehicle before in my life :D

My van however, needs some dropped spindles ASAP. And some tubbed wheelarches. ;)

Already got a weedeater, wagewest dropped spindles and H shoe plates are on the way 8) , i wont be going too low.

My 66 bug was stock, i fitted dropped spindles and 45s on the front and it was taking lumps of tarmac at every bump, i got sick if it and went back to stock with fat tyres to fill the arches instead.

Its arch space that annoys me, not height. I love the look of syncros and lowered bays but with the roads in my area i really dont think it will be worth it :? .

im sat here gutted! took my van for 2nd mot after getting all the work done new inspector new fail sheet! mainly suspension he had a problem with. saying it had no travel and rests on its bumpstops. it drives ok i think. i reckon do it well or not at all,i would kill for a stock ride at moment im running out of money

My daily is super low, but hey you only live once and I like to enjoy my ride to work dodging everything higer than a snail

My van is low but will go a little lower without any clearance issues.

Remember if you spend the top dollar at the beginning of the lowering, then you will have trouble free driving, cut corners and it will bite you on the arse at some point.

NEVER a truer word said there Easy ....... Remember people if your van Knocks/rubs or bangs cus its lowered SOMETHING is clearly Wrong .

If your tyres catch there the wrong size  I went through 3 sets of front tyres before fitting 175/55/15s to the Gadget bus and 3 lads and 4 peoples gear plus large trolley jack and tools to EBi ...It didnt rub once

If your bus fails the M.o.t due to lack of Travel ..... Cut down/off the bump stops This will improve the ride no end

If you have done all of the above and it still rides like shite Your shocks are wrong ...Im just devoloped some new Gas front / Rear shocks to be sold by me under the " Gadgets Shop " banner Get It  . these are slam shocks that will go down to 225mm fully compressed and will fit even the lowest Bay /split bus front or Rear . Its taken a while but now there done . They are £ 49.99 a pair and if you bought the equivalant Spax shocks from Machine 7 there £ 145 a pair which is why im determined to Give something back to the Early bay scene and NOT rip people Off

Please NOTE when lowering your bus 1 pair of Shocks DOES NOT fit all No matter what Heritage/SSP/ Just Kampers tell you . AND when buying a set You need to Ask the fully compressed Meaurement

If it helps You which it will put the bus on the floor with all the weight in it ,I.e interior engine etc then with the front shocks off measure the dimension between the the bottom shock stud and the top mounting Hole . This dimension is the measurement YOU need to determine what shocks you need on your bus .

Now typically Bus front suspension can move up to 60 mm on the move so if your measurement is 320 mm You need shocks that will compress down to 270 mm MINIMUM........... NOT 300 mm as the EXperts say as your travel will run out and You will hear a Large Bang everytime you hit a pothole sized Bump

Gadgets Shocks Avalible NOW

Good advice as always

We dropped (not slammed) ours and I went through various tyres thinking we had an issue, changed shocks for shorter ones and then on a trip back from the pub one day with a fellow EBer in the cab they got straight to the problem I hadn't cut the bump stop arms off   . I didn't think we where that low so had left them on. You learn from your mistakes

Easy

Love the look of your notch 8) 8) 8), had a nice ruby red 63 back in the 90's which I slammed and painted dark blue and my first car, a ruby red 63 bug (which I bought back in the 80's) and slammed & painted pastel blue & white in the 80's and subsequently black in the 90's. The strange thing is now I really like the look of ruby red..... funny old world!

Re: ride height for our bus, though I love the slammed look , I actually like driving around looking above the hedgerows for once. However we would love to get rid of the wallowing around corners deal, thinking of possibly installing 2.5 inch dropped spindles to improve looks without overly compromising the riding up heigh and ride. Anyone any input on shock choice (possibly something progressive) or the spindles.

Kind regards

Nick & Zile

Apologies Gadget... must remember to read the full thread. :D

Would your shocks be suitable for a stock or mildly lowered bus?

Cheers
Nick

Love the notch, always had a thing for them. Easy, was looking at the mag feature on your bus hoping to find info on the bra. Not wanting to be a copycat, but want one just the same, it looks the biz! Would you be a top fella let on as to where it came from?
Gadget boy, top stuff re shocks etc. Put a K&L beam on my early early, but still used the old ball joint shocks. It's a US bus and the shocks are stamped with the brand name 'SEARS' which as most will know, sell everything ever made by anyone anywhere, from shoes to toys to clothes to stereos to sofas to... you get the idea. What I didn't know was that they did shocks for lowered busses; measured 255mm fully compressed!

some usefull infor there, i will be lowering my van, and allthough i would love to have it slammed, I want it to be comfy and safe, my plan at the moment is to fit dropped spindles, and an adjustable beam, hopefully this will, give e the desired height and ride quality, although i am always up for any constructive advice on different options.

I'll be driving my bus at stock height due to our governement malicious laws...
In my country it's practically illegal to lower you car, and it IS illegal to narrow or otherwise
alter the front and rear beam in any way.
So I'm forced to drive at stock height. The alternative is play hide and seek with the law and drive to an MoT-station escorted by some boys in blue.
I'll try and do my best to make my van as special as possible tho.

genuine question then ?

having seen the quantity (and quality) of lowered, narrowed, 'slammed' buses at the european bug in show that were driven there from england... were they all being driven illegally on the belgian roads, or is there some sort of exemption for overseas drivers / vehicles ?

in particular i'm thinking about insurance and *that* accident on the way back :(

has anybody got a factual answer to this :?:

Ok 1st Guys my shocks are Gas and the ride is firm BUT not wallowing ( Imagine a bus that will corner But Not Uncomfortable ) So the bus rides well even with, 2 people two dogs and all our camping gear for a week away .

2nd i had better get some photos up asap and people can see them Cus that helps and Big Nick you can run them on a midley lowered bus But to be sure Take measurements of your spacings between your upper and lower mountings depending on whether you fit them to the front or rear and we can go from There ........

Also Early bay fans Im devoloping quite a few items for Early bays  some of which will blow you away AND yes the first set of Gadget Dropped spindles are JUST about to go ON Test

I will keep you All posted
