anyone use a zig unit?
i wanna run a 3 way fridge minus the gas so 12v/240
want to charge a leisure battery, is this better via a split charge or from a zig (when plugged into 240) occasionally
also want a 240 socket and run a few lights inside,
do u guys have seperate 240 lights or have 12v lights running through a zig? that also use the leisure battery?
is there a real easy way to do this or ? i will gather parts i need and any electrical work will be carried out by a qualified :)
sorry if its wrong section :/

or will it be better to use 2 seperate looms as such 1 for 12v lights, sockets etc and 1 for seperate 240vsockets,lights etc
and just run a split charge and run vehicle to charge, i do have a large solar panel too if i need it,
cheers guys im ideally looking for cheapest but best option that uses less space and weight cheers again

I am running a ZIG unit CF-9. I certainly isnt the cheapest of options - even 2nd hand market is pretty high.

If you intend on running a 3-way fridge, I believe you can only run this through the Zig unit using the fridge specific connection. Having said that, I have a 12/24v fridge which I connect directly(fused) to the leisure battery which the zig unit obviously charges

I run my propex heater controls and interior 12v LED lights through the zig unit. I do not have any 240v appliances to use so do not have have plug sockets.

If you run a ZIG it is reccommended to fit an RCD unit between the site hookup and the zig unit to protect the ZIG and bus from surges - simplified its just a circuit breaker which you can pick up for 10quid from caravan breakers

here's a link to my install:

I'm not a fan of having everythinng on display (i.e. zig unit, vents etc) so worked at locating everything out of sight - or at least not glaring at you

I think the silver one is not an actual zig as its so small so just a distribution unit, wheres the brown one will have all i need like charger etc?
I do have a rcd unit too and all this works i was needing the zig, but as u say the fridge runs from it i think il need to ?

I've got a CF-8 in the bus and a CF-9 in the Rapido, but the fridge is run from the leisure battery direct as it keeps blowing the fuse on the CF-8.
You've got a Zig CF-7, I don't think this will run a fridge either.

As Nathan says, you'll need a 230V RCD protected supply to the Zig, and will also need to run +ve and -ve feeds from the Zig to both starter and leisure batteries.

Thanks for the reply, so if i run the brown one, has fridge options and charger options, would i run a seperate feed from a 240v hookup to a socket as well as a 240v feed to the zig?

Good link thanks il try to find a manual for the brown abi caravan one

Whatever option you choose you'll still need a separate consumer unit to feed any 230V sockets and the Zig/charger unit.

May I ask why you're not using the gas setting on the fridge- storage? It's way more efficient than electricity- things actually get cool!

I dont wanna use gas as i dont want to cut a hole in the side of the van and have those little square bits bolted to it i would if i could find away not to do that as like u say it would be a lot better that way

This is the exact reason why I went for the most electric fridge option.... I had thought of plumbing the gas flue down through the floor and then out to the sill, but was soon told that the flue must not travel downwards...
