dear all

i have a lovely new ATE master cylinder for my 1970 bay in my hot sticky hands it arrived 20 min ago and i want to fit it and thought to be honest i could but then my wife found out!

and after reading the haynes manual se says i need to make sure that i rest position the ball end of the push rod should have a 1mm clearance before it contact the bottom of the recess in the piston, this is a qoute from my wife who know the book backwards

is this true also how do you do it and any other tips??

please help need to be allowed to mess about and to be honest she trust you lot more than she does me!!!

thanks i advance

Interesting this post as I have to do the same thing. So far ive bolted the cylinder on and removed the pushrod ,slackened the lock nut off and removed the push rod from clamp, cleaned all the threads and oil'd it up a little .Put it all back together without the rubber cover. thats as far as ive got "Rain stops play"
I was thinking adjust the rod so its just touching then backit off a bit 1mm,tighten lock nut.Remove pin/rod slide rubber cover on and replace rod and pin.
Dont know if this is the right way to go about it but I can't think of any otherway of doing it :? not much help really as I haven't done it yet.Ill be watching this to find out ;)

i think i am going to do the same thing but while i have the cylinder out i will take the rod out

then put it in till it touches then mark then 1mm back then fit it all back together again on the van

it wont be till sat morning now but i will let you know how i get on

The master cylinder operating rod connects to the bottom of the brake pedal. So you can operate the brake pedal from underneath by pulling it up and down.In resting position the brake pedal should be held up with the return spring. You want 1 mm of freeplay before the rod starts pushing the master cylinder.

So all you need to do is slacken the locknut on the operating rod, wind it in a bit to shorten it,fit everything together and check the freeplay by pulling the brake pedal up and down, keep adjusting the rod length until you have 1 mm of freeplay and lock it up.
