So I have finally bitten the bullet.

My first bus had a pop-top, and it was great, although after an incident where someone tried to 'hide' my bus under a low arch. I completely fell out of love with pop-tops. I said I would never have another one, especially having travelled around in our current one and being able to go into all sorts of car parks with height restricters.
Fast forward to now, and with two kids, we realised that a pop top was needed. We use an awning, but really want to have the ability to camp all in the van when just stopping for the night. Plus the added headroom will be a complete bonus.
A westy roof was an easy choice, although fitting was not.
I wondered if we should go for an early or late, and the larger roof rack was the winner for the early (and I just prefer the look).

Roofs are difficult to get hold of, and the prices of original on eBay are out of control!

In terms of fitting, I was split between an excellent garage (who built my engine, and I use for everything else) and Morecambe and Wize. I had looked at lots and lots of people, and Morecambe and Wize have done this conversion quite a few times, and they provided excellent photos of examples and answered all my questions. Their quotation was very detailed and open too. I drove my van up to see them (London to Morecambe in the driving rain - nice). They have a great set-up, and very clean and tidy.

Here are the photos they have provided so far....

Before the chop:

Here we go, it's a pop-top for now, and a rag top in the future!

It's on and up! My new spoiler for turbo boost mode (and for the kids to sleep in):

I'll post some more images next week.

Scary stuff! But looks good :D

Pop tops rule for camping

Not many things are cheap with buses these days!!
What certainly wasn't cheap was the crazy prices that was being asked for second hand westy roofs!

that looks great
im thinking of doing this to our tin top
as you say ive been on the lookout for a westy top and the prices seem ridiculous
did you use an original top or a new one ?
looking forward to some more photos
norm :D

Norm, used a new one. I spent far too long researching all the options. I will put more pictures up at end of week.

The only annoying thing is that I'll need a new headlining, but I knew this.

Some more pics for your viewing pleasure...Morecambe and Wize have been very very good to deal with.

Just an observation but are the gas rams ever going to be able to tension the poptop canvas in the same way the original supports did, I cant see how they can, the original design featured an over centre support which when locked into place tensioned the canvas correctly, a gas ram is never going to achieve that?

No they will not, as the material used for the pop-top is thicker to the normal material. It is sail material basically.

Its really great, I'm very chuffed. I just need to find some foam to use for the bed.

hello
I hope you don't mind me asking
where did you got your roof from ?
ive been looking at one from uk poptops and wondered if it was the same ??

thanks norm :D

Hi Norm, it is from Morecombe and Wize. Contact mark there and he will help.
