Wild camping...

...I know its illegal in England, since the "new age traveller/rave" thing - but in reality - if you're discretely parked up out the way - not making mess/noise - are you likely to get a penalty notice or be moved on.

We're not thinking of making a habit of it - but we plan to go to Cornwall in peak season - and will spend a night somewere around the New Forest en-route - and to stop, pop and drop sounds ideal.

I did read on a caravan site that Tesco tend to turn a blind eye on overnight parking in their car-parks ?

...and also - many pubs will permit overnight parking if you eat/drink there...?

...and it seems some people are afraid of being attacked - (I can't believe this is a real danger unless you park somewhere daft)

I've only read about this stuff - can anyone give any real life stories on this subject....

Your bang on with Tesco, if you park away in the corner somewhere however if I were you at look on wild camping site and find a recommended pub . It's surprising how many are accommodating . I live near a busy tourist route and most pubs round our way are game

Would you really want to start your holiday in a Tesco car park? There's a website with a list of or links to pubs that allow camping. Trying googling something along those lines. Personally that's what I would do, or find a little farm maybe?

I fully agree - but if we just need somewhere to stop late at night and leave first thing in the morning it may be hard to find somewhere, or arrange in advance, or to start knocking on doors - I'm just exploring the options...

Agree normally roll into a boozer and ask straight away! i always say weel be ordering food etc. if he say no we dont order food and 20 pints, have found most peeps totally entertaining to the idea as they realise we are staying the whole evening and food to boot and in the pub closure times it not good business to turn that custom away.

Having said the above have never had any one say no and sumtimes you may be surprised to find the do brekky too.

wild/semi wild is the way forward or midweek for a night at haven holidays is a fiver!!!!! well it was last year!

a couple of years ago after parting company with an ex, I wanted some me team and took my split screen from Peterborough across to newquay, up along the north coast of cornwall /devon into exmoor, down to exeter to see a relative and back home again.

It was about 9 days, and 2 of those were on a campsite. I found all sorts of obscure covert laybys out of the way , not interfering with anyone /blocking land. I loved it. I like the idea of the pubs though, at least there will be more people around until bed time.

whos in for group discount at the publishers?

There's a great pub down the road a bit from me that have always let you camp because its so far out of the way you wouldn't be able to go there if they didn't ( no one I know does designated driver) lol The Hampshire Bowman at Dundridge check it out :)

I did a trip that was all wild camping some years ago and I think I found all the safe places on this site .... http://www.wildcamping.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Have fun :)

We/I wild camp in our bus all the time. Since when has it been illigal lol (not that it bothers me if it is). I just use common sense. Use laybys, small car parks, quiet locations. The main thing for us is finding locations where there is not a soul around. Will be away next weekend doing the same. You cant beat being the only people parked up on a cliff top!
I deffinately would not want to be anywhere near a supermarket or a pub.

Just get out there and enjoy!! :D

We camp all over the place and never stay in holiday parks or camp sites, we go away to get away from it all, not to put up with more neighbours  we've never had a problem just tuck ourselves away, don't stay in the same spot to long and always leave the place tidy 8)

I think as long as its not an A road or motorway the rule of the police is tired take a rest, you may get one or to knocks if your not descrete but generally that's what the larger layby are for to take a break, I am sure any decent orificer would turn a blind eye as long as you don't drink, you can still be arrested for being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle, I found that out sleeping in my car after a freinds party, luckily not charged.

That may be the case in a car, but I'm sure its different if its a camper. After all, if you can sleep in it you dont need to drive it. :D

Here Here! :D

(Never had a problem in over 20 years of wild camping. For me, that's the whole point of having a VW camper. The more self contained/self sufficient the better) :D

Just meant if your in a layby your not supposed to be in, then you are drunk in charge of a motor vehicle, the exception is when you are in a proper campsite or place with permission.

Maybe I'm just getting the wrong end of the stick lol :D

Anyhow....Have camper...will camp! :D

All land in England belongs to someone, and so you need permission from the landowner. Be sensible and considerate though and you'll be very unlucky to be moved on :)

Well, all I can say is that I have never had/or asked permission from anyone in over 20 years of wild camping, and I dont know of anyone else that ever does/has either.
But hey, thats just my/our world I guess. :D

But hey, just do what feels right to you I guess! Have fun whatever you do with your Bay! :D
