Hey people , i need some advice , I have an AM Code Beetle Gearbox in my garage , question is do i put it in my Bay or sell it on ,

So i need to know if it will work in my Van , I have a 69 running a 1600 SP Engine with no mods and 185/65/15 tyres on the rear

Any advice welcome

From my limited knowledge Graham I would say it would work. I recall speaking to Graham L at a recent show and he was saying a lot of the french guys run their bays with this gearbox conversion. Even though the AM box was made for a 1300 beetle the gearing is very similar to a 6 rib. So less acceleration but lower revs on the motorway where it counts in my opinion. Can't comment about the work/mods involved in fitting it. I'm sure someone with more expertise can elaborate.

Grazy, yes it will work.
you will need either an adaptor kit from Axlfoley on this forum or to make them yourself along with the following.
RHD clutch cable and later style.
Clevis pin for that cable.
Beetle or MK2 golf CV joints.
Correct clutch.
Correct release bearing.
3x 15mm spacer
Mod your front gearbox mount a little
Below are the gear ratios for an AM code box
3.78 / 2.06 / 1.26 / 0.93
4.375
And now the bay gearbox
3.80/2.06/1.26/0.82
5.375
All the gearbox ratios are on the Internet if you want to look at other gearboxes for comparison.
As you can see the AM code box has similar ratios through the box but the final drive is lower, this is what you want as the lower final drive equals less RPM for more MPH. You won't see massive changes with this box but I would guess between 300-500 RPM.
