every thing appeared ok this am, short about 10mile round trip.

tried to start midday and no start, as key is turned to 1st position ignition and warning lights come on as normal, but the electronic rev counter also kicks, or slowly rises which is not usual, as turn key to 2nd position to start starter, the warning lights go out and the rev counter falls to zero and there is no sound from the starter, no solenoid noise either. Turn off and try again and this sequence repeats.

Anyone met these symptoms before cos they're new to me?

Many times, check the battery connections both cables and both ends. Check the connection on the starter motor (the big one). Check the connection to the starter solenoid. Looking is not enough, you must remove each one clean it and refit making sure it is clean and tight. Make sure you disconnect the battery before you disconnect anything else.

ok, thanks for that, I was expecting something electronic like coil or whatever it is that insists on being turned off before a second attempt at starting.
