Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could tell me what wood I should use for the wooden headlining and side panels in my 1970 westy. I am guessing some for of exterior/marine ply would do the job and at what thickness? Any suggestions? I was also thinking of doing the door panels in the same stuff.

Many thanks

Reuben

Hello Reuben, 3.6mm ply, although it's 4mm really. ;)

That's great thanks for your help :) any ideas on what coould be used for finishing strip where the wood meets the edge of the poptop cutout?

Thanks again

Reuben

I used a Ronseal stain on mine that had a protective quality to it. It aged the panels to look more like the og ones as well as stopping any damp problems. Varnish will end up peeling off, I reckon?

I have 4 mm ply on my roof (tintop Devon moonraker) and the side panels are also plywood with light oak varnish, I made these 6 years ago and have never peeled and never had condensation issues either.

You will need 5ft x 5ft for the roof as you need the grain of the wood running down the van so it will bend to the curve of the roof.

hope this helps

Can anyone recommend where I might be able to by Baltic Birch Ply in 3 or 4mm 5x5 sheets? I can find plenty of exterior ply but more difficulty with the birch.

Cheers

Reuben
