In my case it's just me, all my mates are tied up with the exception of one that helps me from time to time with the heavy stuff.

So here is my me list, so far;

Brakes
Suspension
Gearbox fitting, inc shift rods refurb and bushes, Drives shafts
Engine in/out a couple of times
Electrics (although, I'm at the point of throwing in the towel on this)
Bodywork (Minor rust repair)
Interior refurb

I won't touch any major bodywork issues or a full re-spray.

I have to admit I use a local specialist for most of the work on mine. although I did help fit the engine and extra's.

But I have refitted the interior, stereo and done the wiring, I also removed the old engine. I did also change the oil at the weekend and fixed the leaky rocker cover. So I do some jobs myself.

But I work full time and dont get home until late in the evenings, that and wanting to go to the gym and spend time with my wif and kids at the weekends means I don;t have a huge amount of time. Thats my list of excuses and I am sticking to them as the reason I dont get my hands that dirty :)

Well i am at other side of family fence ,since the missus left me i have endless time to get on with important vehicle repair/serevice/maintenance stuff thou for the necc 2 man stuff i am fortunate that my friend owns a commercial garage wot he lets me use re the big tools i do not have ,i.e. press, welding etc .

Do as much as I can myself. The bits I left to the pro's during the resto...welding & paint.upholstery.

everything else I do myself,so satisfying to do stuff yourself & know its been done right.

I've done everything on mine so far...

The only things I've considered getting pro work for is top coats of paint and door cards. I've still not come up with an nice complex design that I feel I can do myself on the doors cards. :? And I have various shades of beige going on that I'd like done properly in the future when funds permit.

I love it, just wish I had more time to crack on with it and my Beetle!

Would rather it look ''so so'' and know i did it, ( with help from dad ) than just handing a large chunk of cash to a pro restorer. Saying that my woodwork is appalling and its taken me forever now have to wait for the paint runs to dry before i sand them out :msn4: ............IT WON'T BLEEDIN BEAT ME

Things I've done:

Rebuilt engine
Rebuilt gearbox
Modified and fitted an after market loom with my mate
Lowered it
Rebuilt all the brakes, hubs & wheel bearings
Converted to UK rear lights
Fitted sound system
Replaced roof canvas
Tidied up and modified interior
Wax-oiled underside
Painted bumpers, overriders and pop top

Other stuff:
Respray and metal work done by Dan Leech at Buswerx
Solex carb refurbished by Pete @ The Cogbox
2110 motor being built by Hector Howe

engine out - with help
referb all rubbers and seals plus new piston rings and scrapers
front beam off
WELD front beam
refurb front beam new shocks new ball joints etc
refurb brake calipers
put it all back together and back on

future jobs that i shall be doing
new cv joints
referb steering box (not looking forward to it)
referb rear brakes

i have not done the body work as i wanted it to look the dogs do da's rather than a dogs dinner but i have been practicing my welding (see front beam) and willin future be doing all myself.

This from a man who has never done stuff like this before. As i read on here when i first started "have ago you never know".

I don't do much work on the bus myself. I can do the odd servicing bit here and there but I'd rather know that things were done properly and if I were to do them they just wouldn't. The other reason I don't do it is I work during the week and would rather spend the weekends out in her rather than trying to undo what I've done wrong when trying to fix her up  :D

As Doris above, hoping it will stay the same, welding, blasting and painting and machining of block goes to pros, other stuff I'm hoping to do myself again...
Time is of the essence now though, but I used to love it, just gotta get back into it and hopefully get a garage where I can do some work.

Hey Irish Pete, its really satisfying doing the things yourself, the more you do the more confident you will get. You can do it!

I tend to to the mechanicals and top end rebuilds plus electrics and interior but leave the bodywork to Sam at PFP in Newton Grange. Top bloke so far.

I do have a pal with a bit of experience that helps out when needed.

I can do strip down and rebuild of most mechanical stuff but don't have patience for bodywork, my welding is passable. I'm ok unless a bolt snaps or something. Had to learn by necessity, can't afford to pay a garage to charge £25+ an hour when I get paid less than half that. :(

I do all my own paint n bodywork, I love doing engine n oily stuff but don't get much time :(
I'm looking forward to fitting the interior & I built most of the interior on my splitty myself, which I was quite proud of :D
Wiring, no thanks, that's what my mate Darren is for he also does any complicated stuff I don't understand

I wish I had more time to do more myself but with a baby due imminently , a house to do up & a business to run, I'm a little short on free time

I also wish I had more knowledge & experience of jobs on the bus but I've always been spoilt up until a couple of years ago as if my Dad didn't do a job for me my Grandad did

Hopefully I'll get time to do a few more jobs this year n learn as I go????
