I know for sure that the Pms3 doesn't charge unless on hook up as I've run one for about 8 years in my split screen. Not sure on the zig, it would need to have a feed from the alternator to do that though so should be easy to check if there is a wiring diagram.

I installed split charge in my type 4 a couple of weeks ago. If your regulator is on the firewall that is the easier place to pick up the trigger for the split charge relay. The alternator is a pig to get to.

Don't suppose you have a note of which wires on the regulator were used on your type 4 do you? I have a regulator also mounted on the firewall, hadn't thought of picking up the split charge connections there. Durrr :D

If you happened to have a pic then that would be super! ;)

Thanks :)

Checked mine today - it was the blue wire at the regulator that I tapped into that now switches the relay for the split charge.

Hope that helps!

So I managed to get a cf-9 for a very reasonable some of evil bay... Been checking out a few people's install photos and I'm trying to work out what cable type/size to use as most people seem to be using what looks like 0.75mm-1.0mm 2 core flex , does this seem right or should it be a certain sort of cable.

Here's another dumb question...

What conditions are required for "charging", as in, is there a difference between connecting the leisure battery to the alternator output (via a split charge/Zig etc) as opposed to connecting it to a 12v supply coming from an inverted 240v hookup? The only difference I can see is that an alternator would put out about 13.5v so would a leisure battery still charge from an inverted 12v supply but slowly?
