Can anyone here with a 123 Distributor tell me if an adapter ring is necessary? 123 themselves don't seem to supply one but CSP do and say its necessary. I'd buy from CSP but the postage to Ireland is too high...

CSP say: "Because the 123ignition distributors come with a universal body which can be pushed too deep inside the crankcase, we always include an adapter ring in the delivery contents. So modifications are unnecessary and damage on the air-cooled VW and 4 cylinder Porsche crankcases as a result of a too long shaft can be avoided"

It would be going into a standard AD 1600 case but it’ll be going into a 1904 build later (new mag case)

I haven’t fully decided on buying the 123 unit yet but thought that fit might be an issue going by what CSP are saying.

I dont think its an issue on a standard type 1 engine case as they sell as standard on their site, i believe it just needs a spacer ring to shorten for the other models

Thanks sparkywig - good to know.

@Dci_Carter - 123 came back quickly to say that the adapter is only needed on Porsche cases

Cool that was my understanding as I'm looking to buy one myself and had done quite a bit of research as well [emoji846]

I'm dithering between buying a Pertronix 3 multi spark electronic ignition to go inside my almost new Mexican SVDA along with a Pertronix low resistance coil or the Tune + with my existing coil. I like the idea of being able to tweak the curves in the 123 but the Pertronix kit is a bit cheaper.

123 seems to be a pro choice if to adjust a load of settings via Bluetooth or USB or have a pre programmed unit, the appealing thus to me is you can imoberlise the vechicle via your phone with the Bluetooth option

Well i do some lurking on German forums and there are some problems reported with worm out distributor gears/shims with fitting a 123 to type 1 and type 4 casings.
The problem is that there is a space between the engine case and the base of the 123 distributor so if you push it in the case there is no stop like the original disributor and if you push it in with to much presure you can put to much stress on the gearing, the ring acts as a stop like the original disributor so the gearing has the right ammount of backlash.
It’s a simple ring that anybody can turn on a lathe, i had one under my 123.

That's very interesting - thanks. I dug out my Mexican SVDA which measures 35mm from the base to the end of the shaft body. The 123 version measures 43mm, according to their pics so I guess the 123 has 8mm of exposed shaft (sorry...) and that is what the CSP ring and the 123 Porsche ring are for. From what you're saying, its not absolutely necessary but probably a good idea.

Having looked again at the CSP website, I noticed their own Pacemaker distributor which has 123 internals but comes in a choice of finishes and is the exact length for the Type 1/Type 4 case.

€100 more than the 123 version though and their postage tends to be expensive.

Very interesting....So is the answer
1. Buy and fit a ring or
2. Push it in to place, but then ease it back out 2 to 3mm (to allow for allow for heat expansion)

Pays your money and takes your choice? The oring on the shaft stops the oil flow so probably nothing to loose by backing our existing 123s out a little?

I think that the little gap would bother me just in terms of appearance. I've just found the Porsche ring sold as a separate item on the 123 website (https://www.123ignitionshop.com/gb/specials/167-PorscheRing.html) priced at €10 - they'd sent me a link to a full Porsche kit that included it but at least that makes it easy to include in any order. Its 7mm so maybe my measurement of 8mm above was a bit off.

Looks conclusive if you read feedback on the spacer ring

It's not mentioned anywhere but this ring is required when fitting the 123 unit to a vw t2. I've just fitted another 123 unit to a vw t2 and this spacer was needed. The 1st unit I fitted I was unaware of the gap left along the shaft and had to make a spacer at the time.

In my opinion the spring that is in the middle of de distributor gear provides the right ammount of downforce pressing the gear down, the 123 whitout ring can be pressed further down so the spring is fully compressed and both gears the slotted part in the engine case and the notched distributor gear are botomming out and touching each other and with to much downforce the gear can eat it’s way down in the engine case.

I'm just looking at alternative distributors with vacuum advance, these come with or without vacuum advance, but I can't see a vacuum canister on the side of the Vac advance ones. Does the hose fit straight onto the body of the dissy at the vacuum port, or do you have to buy a canister to attach the hose?

Anyone got any pics of one installed? :msn4:

cheers for that, I couldn't tell from all the pics I've looked at, as the vac port must be at the back with a black pipe, and it's very difficult to see what people have done!

Heres the vac advance on the back of mine
