What do people use? I'm thinking of buying a small portable fan heater as opposed to installing a Propex - hopefully much cheaper, there are tonnes on eBay but are they any good?

Thanks

Hi!

Not sure about a 12V one, can't imagine much umph with that, and if they are a high wattage, you'll need to upgrade the cabling to the fag lighter. Only 500W is 40+ amps. And it'll flatten the battery by the time the van has heated up no doubt

Would you be using the heating on a hook up on site? If so, would this do:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plinth-Heater-Built-in-or-Built-Under-2-Kilowatt-Electric-Plinth-Heater-/151170306722?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Hearing_Cooling_Air&hash=item233273d2a2#ht_2635wt_1141" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

13A plug, 2kw's is 9A @ 220V, so fine for a lower current on site hook up, i think they tend not to be 13A, so i have heard. I am off grid with solar, so never used on site

A propex is great, i have one, highly recommended, but very pricy compaired to the above. Depends on how you are likely to use the van

Hope this helps

Cheers

As aogrady said, 12volt - forget the idea.

I use a small mains thermostatic fan heater (ceramic) in the bus. It's very compact and has two settings, 500 and 1000 watts. 500 watts (about 2 amps) heats the bus up very quickly.

We picked up a slimline rad at a bootsale for a fiver :msn4: its about 500mm x 500mm x 25mm, so quite compact and safe to leave on at night on a hook up ;)

I toying with the idea of one of these. Small, runs off mains and won't set us on fire, gas us or cost a fortune

That should do the job nicely at 500watts and looks neat. The advantage is there's no fan noise.

I will stick with mine though, because its light, only 14 x 13 x 19cm and cost 25€.

We've had one of these for years:

never let us down and if it tips it turns off...
