I've never seen a 72 with early lights before, Is that an early cross-over if that makes sense?

That's because it shouldn't have the early lights technically! To cut a long story short I didn't know much about VWs when I first owned it and the the p/o had fitted some weird combination of Ford lights to the back which didn't look right. Having got further into the resto we then discovered that the original flutes for the large rear lights had been cut off and fillered over - this was after I'd already bought the prettier early rear lights to so I went with them anyway! :animal0028:

Finally found an exhaust that does what I want, fits a '72 Bay and looks the way I want it to!

Got this VW Speed Shop (complete system) waiting to go onto my Bus to replace the existing Bugpack four into one. Should give me a much better gas flow and the big plus is its stainless steel!

Here's a little taster - just waiting for the gasket kit to arrive, then it'll be bolted up and a rolling road session booked for a tuning session!

Had a session working on the bus today.

Needed a new sump plate because the sump nut thread had died, engine oil change, gearbox oil change and fitting of my new stainless exhaust system from VW Speed Shop.

Fitting up the manifold...

Its made a big difference compared to the stock four into one system I had before making the bus go even better and sound better too. Lovely roar from this system.

Hopefully so long as I can get booked in and arrange time off work I'll be heading out to my local rolling road within the next two weeks for a thorough tune up!

Rolling session booked for this Wednesday - hopefully all the upgrades will make a difference. I'll soon find out!

Ok, things didn't go to plan today. Got the bus running sweet as a nut yesterday with pre-checks for the rolling road session today. Then it threw a pushrod out on No. 2 inlet valve which scuppered the full power runs. Anyway, so long as there is nothing sinister lurking inside it looks like it is just a bent push rod to replace and building the rockers back up at the moment. More investigation tomorrow. :(

Cheers gninman. It doesn't look too bad to be honest, more frustrating than anything.

Got the van home today and had a good look at No. 2 cylinder head and both pushrods for the cylinder. Only one has bent, and only slightly at that, while two shims are also needed for the valves as one of those was smashed into pieces.

Hopefully it will all be back together within a week and ready to go again after a compression test and oil change! :)

Whereabouts is the Rolling Road you use? When I get the time/money/inclination to drag my bus out from its year long sleep it will need doing pretty much straight away, and most importantly whats the prices like??

This time out I went to Specialist Auto Services on Brook Street in Peterborough Centre, but in future I'll be going back to Peter Baldwin at Wimpole near Cambridgeshire. Nothing wrong with what the guys at SCS are doing, but there are a couple of things I prefer about Peter's set up including the large fan which he has to blow air under the van when its running and the fact he regularly tunes flat four motors.

Hopefully in a couple of weeks the bus will be all ready to go again, but I need to make sure everything is as it should be with some road miles first once the repairs are complete.

Got my bus back up and running today. Full set of new pushrod tubes for all cylinders, new lash caps all round and new adjuster screws throughout too. Compression test gave good results - 126psi throughout - so it has been fired up and runs just like it did before, except a little better with the engine timing having been set on the rolling road a couple of weeks back.

Suffice to say I'm a happy bunny - just got to get a couple of hundred miles on it to bed in the new pushrods! :D

Came across a bargain set of JGE Gasburners through Paul at T2D and their facebook page last month - they had done one mile and were up for grabs, so I jumped on them having wanted a set for a while (just need to fit the centre caps to them)! Now I want to get the bus sitting a little lower now, but that will be on the job list for next year!

Anyway, here's a few pics...

And I couldn't resist pulling it out of storage for pic in the snow...

Hey Chris,

Not got as far as fitting the rear bumper yet - got some big issues with chassis rot which means that after Big Bang the bus is coming off the road, being stripped completely and being turned on its side with a set of rollers so that we can start a fresh and full chassis restoration.

I've still got the Empi fives - they are sitting in my shed without tyres, 5x112 stud pattern by the way.

I will be indeed at Stamford Hall. I'll be rolling over with the ADK crew.

Just back from a great weekend away with family in Norfolk. Another 400 miles of trouble free running racked up and now to prepare for Big Bang which will be my buses last outing for a couple of months.

Here's a couple of pics:
