2007 in a bus?

and before anybody asks... I'm talking cc's 8)

My pretty peppy 1776 (which was previously in my bug) has just been stripped down and I'm on the cusp of throwing money at a rebuild based around a new CB 78mm crank.

Now, before I commit to the 2007 rebuild, can anybody offer opinions/suggestions for going bigger? I appreciate other factors are to be considered i.e. cam, heads, rods, pistons/barrels, carbs etc but I don't want to be thinking "If only..." in 6 months time :)

Also, I believe big-bore heat exchangers are now available. Is anybody running these on a bus? If so, with what exhaust header/muffler?

As the engine was previously in a bug I have a whole host of redundant bits i.e. lightened & balanced VW rods, 35horse fanshroud, 1 5/8 merged exhaust + tiger muffler, Berg 300 cam, 90.5 barrels & pistons (will need cleaning, new rings etc), Berg breather/filler, and probably more :)

On the big bore heat exchangers - I think I am correct in saying that they don't have any internal fins therfore reducing the heat transfer. Just a thought.

Funnily enough I spoke to my prospective engine builder this afternoon about considering an 82mm crank (with 90.5 B&P's to increase displacement to 2110 I believe), and to summarise the phone-call... Yes, it would be an immediate way to increase power, but it also introduces additional work (i.e. rods, chevy journals, longer pistons, possibly bigger heads etc etc), and therefore extra cost - all debateable not for not a great deal extra horsepower.
 
the type 2 makes a lot more resistant torque than a bettle, so if you consider a on piece forged crank stay on a 78 one vw main / vw rods.

Do not go with chevy journals in a bus, prefer the Porsche ones or stay with vw journals. Strength of the crank assembly is very important on a bus.

If you really want a 82 go with a dpr unit with Type4 center main and you will have a strong crank. If you go on the 82 route, go with H beam rods which are smaller than I beam rods like CB unitec (less stroker work in the case)

A killer crank would be a 84 dpr unit, type4 center main, Porsche journals but not the same budget as a Chinese one piece forged unit.

Thanks for the info Kombiporsche... More options for me to think about. Hey, I've already viewed your thread (several times) - luvin' the video's of your bus :)

I just thought I'd post some extra info regarding my engine...

- I already have a crank - it's a new 78mm forged c/w CB performance one (made from the preferred grade - I forget which one now tho lol). I got it a while ago, and this is what started my re-build thinking :)

- I have some very very nice heads from my old bug engine. Only 40x35.5, but done by Jeff Denham (back in mid 90's). The heads are "beautiful" (so my engine builder says :)) and are machined for 90.5 and I don't really want to have any extra work on them (other than a quick service).

Basically I want an engine that will be torquey enough in a bus, will pull strong and also allow me some line-loc fun :) Will a '007 do this for me?
